Washington State Republican Primary Results
2012
Romney - 19k
Paul - 13k
Santorum - 12k
Other - 7k
Total - 51k
2016
Trump - 403k
Cruz - 56k
Kasich - 52k
Carson - 21k
Total - 532k
This primary was pushed much later in the calendar in 2016, but we've seen other states with calendar changes, and none had such a dramatic year to year swing in turnout. 2012 was actually held during the competitive portion of the primary season, so if anything, the calendar change should have been a net negative on turnout.
Cruz and Kasich each pulled in more votes than the total turnout of 2012?
Ben Carson received more votes than the 2012 winner?
Total turnout compared to 2012 increased by more than 10x?
Oh, and these numbers are with only 72% reporting. They aren't even close to final. What the heck?
Across the rest of the country, turnout has been up around 1.5x. What in the world happened in Washington? Are these numbers even correct?
