Evidently smartphones have FM chips built in, but not activated (streaming I guess is more profitable for some companies). But there is a movement in the U.S. and Canada to get the different telecoms to get on board. Supposedly sprint (available), AT&T (soon) and T-mobile (2016 or 2017) have given in and the FM radios in android phones will be unlocked (can anybody confirm?). Verizon and Apple so far have not came on board. U.S. support for this initiative is coming from NPR, American Public Media and FEMA.
Once the tuner is unlocked, evidently you do need headphones designed to act as an antenna.
