Pentegon Labels Founding Fathers, Conservatives as Extremists
The DOD warns students to be aware “that many extremists will talk of individual liberties, states’ rights and how to make the world a better place.”

Under a section titled “Extremist Ideologies,” the document states, “In U.S. history, there are many examples of extremist ideologies and movements. The colonists who sought to free themselves from British rule and the Confederate states who sought to secede from the Northern states are just two examples.”
Who knew the founding principles of this country were considered extreme and dangerous and that groups that believe in such things are now "hate" groups?

And one sentence prior to that, "ideology" is defined as:

an ideology is a set of political beliefs about the nature of people and society ... While not all ideologists are violent in nature, it is characteristic of ideology to be action-oriented and to regard action in terms of a military analogy.
    It also defines "extremism" as:

A term used to describe the actions or ideologies of individuals or groups who take a political idea to its limits, regardless of unfortunate repercussions, and show intolerance toward all views other than their own.
So ... by those definitions, I don't agree that the founders can be considered possessing an extremist ideology, primarily due to the compromise done among those with different views. But I can see how you could make an argument for it. Using violence for political motivations is often put in that context.

But where exactly does it refer to the founders as a "hate" group?

In fact, a few pages it up it says pretty specifically:

So, one cannot say that the terms extremist and hate is synonymous. However, while not all extremist groups are hate groups, all hate groups are extremist groups.
Followed by a list of hate groups, none of which include anything in regards to the founders, or even Confederate states.
