The southern states seem to be working to make their states more hospitable to business. But the issues you talk about take generations to solve. But there is antedotal evidence - Boeing is now in S. Carolina. Louisiana was trying to get Hawker Beechcraft to move their operation down there. Alabama has been working to expand Airbus airbus presence there. Georgia got NCR to move. Tennessee has gotten different parts of the automobile industry to move to their state. Gun manufacturers in Conn. are being drawn to South Carolina. La. now has the Duck Dynasty to draw people in. :tennis:

I'm not saying Cruz is the best candidate, but he's someone to be reckoned with in the Republican party as the fight between the conservative wing and the liberal wing of the party continues.

Hillary has started moving to the right of Obama and positioning herself for 2016. I don't see the republican establishment nominating anybody that is going to energize the Republican Party much less the nation.

My guess is that "traditional" candidates will not have a chance against Hillary (eg Paul Ryan, Chris Christie, Ted Cruz). Too many people remember the Clinton presidency as "the good years," and Hillary would get minority support over another white, male Republican. Probably the best Republican candidate is Marco Rubio, even if only because of the huge Hispanic population in the US (53 million as of the 2010 census).

Unfortunately for the Republicans, I feel that they have a disconnect between what their base wants and what they need to do to win the presidency, whereas the Democrats are more solidified even if they have the weaker, less enthusiast base.

How much do policies really matter though? Only a slim minority of voters decide to vote based on careful analysis and consideration of every politicians policies and how they relate to that voters beliefs. At best the average voter really cares about one or two issues, and many just vote for the guy on "their side," whether that means the party they support or a politician matching their race/gender/ethnicity. Even for those that pay close attention small political gaffs tend to drown out actual discussion.

I like Rand Paul and Ted Cruz, but if Marco Rubio is seen as the more moderate candidate, he could more easily win a primary.

I'm ok with Rubio, outside of his immigration ideas he's fairly conservative. But so was Bush when he was running Texas.

Mia Love was a conservative black woman who lost her race for congress in Utah. She's fantastic and there are many conservative minorities that are involved in state politics. Not that the National GOP has shown to be that smart, but these people need national attention and money.
