  • Government is NOT a business

    Government is NOT a business.

I know it sounds cool among conservatives to throw around big, thoughtless ideas on shrinking the government to nothingness. But I submit that those same people (I've been one in the past) have not thought critically about the repercussions of such acts.

Business is created to extract as much profit as possible for those risking capital.

Government is created to help the people.

Can you see the difference? When smart people would choose a career in government, they would say they are choosing a life of "service".. to the people (in lieu of greater enrichment in the private sector). This choice was considered a sacrifice, a calling.

    Purposes of government:

    Fire control/protection
    Clean water/removal of wastewater
Protection of property and self (police/courts)
    Safe food, vehicles, roadways, airways.
    Reliable communication (phone, mail, Internet)
    Protection from enemy conquer (military)
    Social security (seniors, disabled, hungry)

There are many, MANY other purposes/functions of government that may not often be considered, like stimulating innovation. The U.S. Govt. grants billions every year to "smart people" in order to encourage innovation in fields that are deemed important (national security).

Is the government efficient like a business? Of course not! And nor should it be. It's job is to give **** away (hopefully paying for it all w/ equitable taxing practices) to make the entire nation.. better.

But should the government be good stewards of the tax receipts they do collect? Of course! And that is where the impasse occurs.

Most of the bitching is political. R's don't want a single dime spent on Tommy's new titties. But many of the D's do. So when the R's are in office, they slash spending on gender B.S. When the D's are back, they open up the silicone floodgates.

But what we have going on now is a couple of kooks playing to the crowd. Look at all this **** I slashed!!!11111 ****ING DEMOCRATS!!!!!

This is all just keeping us away from the truth. The truth is far more boring; it's pragmatic, small, and dull, but correct. Torching entire programs that are mostly serving their purpose is children playing checkers.

Strawman thread of the year award?

Cold, you really should read and catch up with what's actually happening. It has nothing to do with what you just posted.

Thanks for your wisdom, CB. Here’s a perfect example that favors what you are talking about.

C'mon man. You can do better than that.

Or are you saying that government serves no purpose? Shall we throw the baby out with the bathwater? What rifle are you gonna choose to defend your home from your 2nd story window tonight?

Incompetent/unfocused helicopter pilot was flying too high and killed a bunch of civilians. Terrible tragedy. No dollar amount can be assessed. Shall we shut down the military now?

I do think a high-speed rail would be a good idea for this country. Many of the nations we're competing with have them and they are a resounding success.

          Fast, efficient, convenient, clean.

You are so smart, CB. That’s absolutely correct. I compared an example of hundreds of billions of dollars of government waste (a boondoggle), that a minimal number of Californians (not speaking about the rest of Americans) will ever use, to our military, which defends us all. By the way, when is that boondoggle going to be completed?

After that the Cal government can begin paying for their mismanagement of fires and lack of water. The American taxpayers will come out ahead every time.

I feel like this post was created by a spambot or something. Doesn't even make any sort of sense.

Reread. A hundred times if that's what it takes.

That isn't nice to say about Kung Wu's contribution. He's just trying to be funny, in a rather unfunny kind of way.

I will say this, at least it seems like he's comprehending what I'm posting. Stubbornly refusing to address it, but I think he's comprehending points that I tried to keep at a 10th grade level.

As for the rest of ya'll....

I just want my government to stop wasting millions of dollars on k-cups and LGBT programs in Africa. That seems pretty reasonable. I'm not in favor in gutting the entire thing, but as a tax payer, I want transparency. Politicians are best at not being transparent. It shouldn't take pulling teeth to clearly identify where taxpayers money is going.

This is exactly what all the conservatives are saying.
