Canada - 25% except on energy products, which is 10%
    Mexico - 25%

    Canada Responds

Canada is moving forward with 25 per cent tariffs on $155 billion worth of goods in response to the unjustified and unreasonable tariffs imposed by the United States (U.S.) on Canadian goods.

The first phase of our response will include tariffs on $30 billion in goods imported from the U.S., effective February 4, 2025, when the U.S tariffs are applied. The list includes products such as orange juice, peanut butter, wine, spirits, beer, coffee, appliances, apparel, footwear, motorcycles, cosmetics, and pulp and paper. A detailed list of these goods will be made available shortly.

Minister LeBlanc also announced that the government intends to impose tariffs on an additional list of imported U.S. goods worth $125 billion. A full list of these goods will be made available for a 21-day public comment period prior to implementation, and will include products such as passenger vehicles and trucks, including electric vehicles, steel and aluminum products, certain fruits and vegetables, aerospace products, beef, pork, dairy, trucks and buses, recreational vehicles, and recreational boats.

Mexico wanted dialog, but will now respond with their own tariffs.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum on Saturday ordered retaliatory tariffs in response to the U.S. decision to slap 25% tariffs on all goods coming from Mexico
Mexico expects the tariffs will lead to a recession in their country.

The Mexican economy could enter a “severe recession” if Trump’s tariffs remain in place for more than a quarter, according to Gabriela Siller, director of economic analysis at Grupo Financiero Base. “If the tariffs last several months, the Mexican peso depreciation could reach record highs.”

Why is it Canada or Mexico's responsibility what gets across our border and into our country? Meanwhile, we're releasing drug dealers/users out of our prisons in bunches. The drug problem in America is because of demand. As long as your children keep buying them, they will get imported. This begins with the family and ends with tough drug laws.

These tariffs aren't good for anyone. And why the excessive tariffs on our neighbors that we have so much commerce with? It's just going to make it harder for American companies to export while driving up costs.

I have no problem with reasonable tariffs to fund government, especially if it replaced or severely lowered our income tax, but this is just stupid.

Who cares. Let the entire bloody world collect on the other side of OUR border. It's our job to defend it.

Expecting someone else to do our work sounds like a Democrat philosophy.

And the second someone tries to cross OUR border without authorization, we vaporize them. That will encourage the others to follow our laws.

No, our border states should cooperate instead of encouraging an invasion at the border, if they want to reap the economic benefit of being a border state.

Naw. That's welfare/big government thinking. I'm sure it was a great tourism boon to Mexico's border states. If they want to have an "invasion party" on THEIR side of the border, so be it. It's not our right to dictate what happens on THEIR side of the border. But if they cross ours illegally... ZAP!

And any economic benefit the companies of Mexico derive is from free trade (which Trump is trying to kill). To think of their economic benefit as something the U.S. Government grants them is... Autocratic thinking (another Trump characteristic).

It will be interesting (maybe sad) to see how the effects will quickly affect Kansas and Wichita specifically. This has a chance to affect the aviation industry, housing costs, gas prices, and interest rates.

Gregory Daco, chief economist at the tax and consulting firm EY, calculates the tariffs would increase inflation, which was running at a 2.9% annual rate in December, by 0.4 percentage points this year. Daco also projects the U.S. economy, which grew 2.8% last year, would fall by 1.5% this year and 2.1% in 2026 “as higher import costs dampen consumer spending and business investment.’’

I haven't been following closely, but is there a semi-logical reason for slapping Canada and Mexico with 25% and China only 10%? I thought China was the great threat and the one that abuses trade or some such.

Some of you are f-ing ridiculous. Like so many of Trump's policies, his tariffs are already paying off before they are imposed. Mexico has agreed to sending 10,000 troops to help control our border in order to curb the tariffs.
Sorry guys. That's called a Trump win. I know how that disappoints many of you.
