As it turns out, Romney did get more votes than McCain. Right now Romney's total stands at 60,861,543 (47.28%). McCain received 59,948,323. So Romney received almost 1 million MORE votes than McCain. Obama has 65,600,358 (50.96%), a little over 4.7 million more votes than Romney but about 4 million fewer votes than Obama received in 2008.

Although these numbers aren't final they are very close. Only 3 states haven't certified their final results (New York, Nebraska and West Virginia). So the final numbers might change slightly, but they won't change much.

All of the final election results are now in. Obama basically won by almost 5 million votes, 65.9 million to 60.9 million (51% to 47%) New York just finished certifying their results because they had hundreds of thousands of provisional ballots due to Hurricane Sandy.

The final actual 2012 numbers: Obama 65,899,660 (51.03%), Romney 60,932,152 (47.19%) Gary Johnson 1,275,827 (.99%) Jill Stein 468,907 (.36%) All Others 556,125 (.43%). Total Votes Counted- 129,132,671 (2.2 million fewer total votes counted than in 2008)

Romney finishes with almost exactly 1 million more votes than McCain had in 2008. Obama finishes with about 3.6 million fewer votes than he had in 2008.
