Longtime GOP Senate moderate Arlen Specter dies

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Arlen Specter, a gruff, independent-minded moderate who spent three decades in the U.S. Senate but was spurned by Pennsylvania voters after switching in 2009 from Republican to Democrat, died on Sunday of cancer, his family said. He was 82.

I guess he was a moderate all his political life and even before the Republican party started going more to the right, he made the change to the Democratic party.

No, he switched cause he was getting his azz beat in the primaries. Moderate is a kind word for what he was.
