Democrat Bob Kerrey Slams Obama

Democratic Senate candidate Bob Kerrey said Thursday that he hates the employer mandate in the Affordable Care Act and that his own businesses might drop employee insurance and pay the federal fine for doing so if the mandate goes into effect in 2014.

Kerrey said wealthy Americans pay their fair share in taxes. And he said President Barack Obama made a big mistake by not following the recommendations of his own bipartisan budget deficit commission.

“I hate the employer mandate,” Kerrey said. “I think it’s going to have a counterproductive impact. We don’t have any (insured employee) that costs us less than $7,000 (a year), and the fine’s $2,000. We’ll dump ’em off. We won’t call it dumping, we’ll say ... ‘Go get it from the exchange.’”

Bob Kerrey is a great American, and a hero, if a touch too liberal for my liking. Nebraska can make no bad decision here (unlike Mass for instance) but he certainly is saying that for political reasons. Nevertheless, he's right to an extent. The key missing point is that doing that is EXACTLY what Obama wants to happen because it will send us down a path to eventual and certain single payer, which is what BHO has STATED would be preferable.

Remember that when you go to the polls.

The whole purpose of Obamacare was to get a foot in the door and a big step closer to a government run nationalized health system. I would say healthcare system, but I'm not expecting care to be a big component of such a system. Your doctor will just love nationalized healthcare. That is assuming you can find a doctor.

If it really true that for every person who is finding a job there are four people giving up hope and are no longer looking for work - who is going to be left to pay for this nationalized health care system.

there are some thing in that I think everybody would agree are good things that help people and protects them from insurance companies like stoping them from denying coverage due to pre-existing conditions and children can stay on their parent plan longer to some stuff on preventive care.

I'm still not 100% about how I feel about certain aspects. I understand not being denied because of pre-existing conditions, but you should pay more in those circumstances. And this is coming from someone who has pre-existing conditions. I'm still not sure how I feel about "kids" staying on until 26. It sounds nice, but I'm not sure there's a positive benefit to it really.

The benefit of kids staying on until 26 is that they can continue funneling money into the university system, racking up more debt and becoming more dependent on the government. If they have to come off earlier, they'd have to go get a job.

I said POSITIVE benefit. You gave me a negative, which I believe there are probably a lot more of.

Those are positive benefits . . . for the government. You weren't specific about who was the beneficiary.

My son just graduated from UA Law School at the age of 26. We kept him on our insurance until he was 24. We found it more cost effective (Cheaper) to purchase health insurance thru the university. IIRC, it was around $500 per year.

If that would not have been available, it would have been nice to keep him on our insurance. I do understand both sides of the argument and would not have a problem with my children having to get their own insurance at the age of 21.

Fair enough. However, when I talk benefits, it's always for us as a people. If the gov't keeps benefiting itself, we're all screwed.
