  • Spirit Aerosystems Strike

Machinist went on strike starting Saturday night at midnight. Union had recommended the contract, union members overwhelmingly rejected the contract. Somewhere there is breakdown in communication between the union and members.

Not sure the union has the upper hand, because if you drive by there, Spirit has back log of 40-60 fuselages in storage waiting to be shipped. Spirit even told the works not to show up for Thursday and Friday.

Have we determined what the union wants?

Those fuselage won't move until the strike is over. Railroad unions will honor their strike and not cross.

It sounds like their Health benefits (deductibles, co-pays, drug coverage, etc) are becoming much less for the same cost, and are one of the main sticking points

Are we sure about that? My current employer is a union shop and there have been strikes that take place that even those unions have told us to keep doing what we do there as the strike isn't about us. I do know there are some union guys that still refused, but as a whole, the strikes we've dealt with have had little to no impact on what we do or the jobs we take/complete.

I'm not a union guy and I don't know or follow policies of different unions and such so maybe there's a long standing history of the railroad union doing this I'm unaware of, but otherwise, there's no guarantee.

Though I will also say that from my limited experience, the railroad union is full of people who look for any chance to not work. We've dealt with that while I've had this job as well, but that was also mostly, if not all, in California.

Spirit is waiting parts from Boeing on a lot of them. U really don’t want be building fuselage that u are going to have hold on to and then modify once parts become available.

The railroad unions have said they will honor the strike.

It looks like the government might intervene somehow.

I still have no clue why Boeing thought it was good to sell off the Wichita plant.

Yeah, no sh!t. Who would have thought that federally subsidizing an industry would lead to costs increasing (see: college tuition)?

                    Internal company politics.

There was a quote from one former executive:

ranks as the highest misstep Boeing has ever made
That why analyst have been trying to get Boeing to consider buying them back, but it would be difficult with them being suppliers to other companies.

I believe they're voting on the new offer today. I did see the other day where the union leaders said something along the lines of it being an industry leading offer or something to that effect.
