Eisenhower Family Demands Stop to Planned Memorial

The family has said it finds the main theme of the memorial offensive to Eisenhower's legacy as a two-term president and a Supreme Allied commander during World War II.

Although the memorial design was unveiled a year ago, the opposition to it grew louder this winter after grandson David Eisenhower resigned from the Eisenhower Memorial Commission, which selected Gehry for the design in March 2010.

Ugh. What a monstrosity and certainly not appropriate for an official memorial. The website opposing this plan has a photo that I think could provide the inspiration for a more appropriate monument - Ike in the early 60s standing at the Normandy cemetery. A statue of a somber Ike with a few carefully placed military cemetery crosses (if that is allowable when someone is not buried under them) would be a better way to acknowledge his contributions and the sacrifice of so many in WWII.

What a disgrace.

My only thought in viewing this brought back a very old limeiric I came across while attending a summer's boy camp many, many years ago that was printed on the Outhouse wall and which was at least much more fitting and honorable than this ridiculous concept:

"When the xxxxhouse poet dies,
We should erect high in the skies,
A monument to his tremendous wit,
A statue made of solid xxxx."

Architect offers changes in Eisenhower Memorial design

Doesn't sound like it will completely make the Eisenhowers happy, but at least he's willing to compromise to some degree. I do think he's attempting to be too unique as opposed to more traditional/classic like most of the memorials there.
