  • GOP Debate - MSNBC

My thoughts on the GOP debate:

Perry: I thought Perry preformed ok. He was fairly aggressive which was interesting. That said, for the most part he seemed at ease and personable; however, he should have knocked that global warming question out of the park – he didn’t. It was a predictable question. He and his staff need to concentrate on his deficiencies. I thought his preparation was inadequate. I don’t think he hurt himself with GOP primary voters last night (I don’t believe the dynamics of the race will change) but next debate will be a real test for Perry. He shows promise but has work to do.

Romney: I thought Romney was solid – no surprise there. He wisely didn’t join the others in attacking Perry over the vaccination issue – “his (Perry’s) heart was in the right place” was good line. It also seemed to me that Perry was deliberately non-combative with Perry despite the best efforts of the moderators. I get the sense that Romney is doing two things: (1) trying to position himself as a moderate alternative to Perry (perhaps taking a page out of Pawlenty’s playbook) - sort of a Perry/Huntsman hybrid; and (2) maybe leaving the door open for a VP slot on a Perry ticket. Would a Perry/Romney ticket help expand support among independents? Maybe.

Gingrich: Once again demonstrates he has a firm understanding of the issues. I like having him on stage – he seems to be able to keep things on track, that and it is just fun to watch him attack the moderators (I imagined Newt dropping the mic, walking off stage, saying “Newt, out.”). Although, in this case, highlighting differences between candidates in primary is sort of what primaries are for…right, Newt (and, yes, the moderators where baiting the candidates)?

Paul: He hates Rick Perry. Liberals (the moderators in this situation) just can’t get their heads around the fact that Paul is Libertarian. Under the surface what they are really asking is “do you really believe that?” Yes, Mr. Williams (and other guy from Politico – who really annoyed me) he does. Move on. I think my wife’s continued reaction to Paul is quite common. She starts off agreeing and then she states “Oh, boy his verbal pace has quickened, he is getting wound up….here comes the crazy talk (shakes head, sigh).” Anyway, Paul was Paul and he didn’t help himself but he will keep his 10% or so. Best part about Paul – I am going to try and make a ring tone of Paul saying “all kinds of sexual activity”.

Bachmann: She was marginalized – largely by the moderators. My basic problem is I think she uses too many catch phrases and can be a little preachy. She is not bad on most issues; but her campaign is in serious trouble.

Huntsman: I am sending the man a bill for my television because his tie has permanently burned into the screen. Otherwise, I found him orange and condescending. Please go away Mr. Huntsman.

Santorum: Once again the lonely wing man. Will he ever get a different podium? I thought Santorum had some good answers last night – he sort of grows on me. That said, he has no chance; however, I think he should be considered for a post in a GOP administration.

Cain: See Santorum, minus podium placement.

Quick aside: Why bring on someone from Telemundo to ask questions about immigration? I sort of felt sorry for the fellow (I am sure Hispanics care about other things too) – I thought, Thank you Mr. Anchor with the Hispanic surname. We have now concluded the immigration portion of the debate. You may leave now.

One more: MSNBC post-debate (super panel, by the way): Al Sharpton discussing how not to alienate moderates and independent voters?

There are actually a couple of pictures circulating that were taken during a commercial break showing Perry accosting Paul. One of them shows Perry grabbing Paul's wrist and putting his finger in Paul's face. Another with his arms spread out as if saying, "what are you doing, Ron?"

Perry can't handle having a target on his back. He's a "frontrunner" and that's exactly why Paul's campaign is going after his record. Welcome to the stage, Mr. Perry. You aren't presidential material.

Really? I have not seen the pictures; but that does not reflect well on Perry if true. Rumor has it Perry does have a bit of a temper.

I have seen the pictures and the dont look like he is accosting Paul. It remains to be seen whether perry is presidential material or not - but in the end what is being talked about is perry vs Romney. I just hope a better candidate emergeges on the scene - I don't see any of these guys beating obama

Then look at a couple other off-air shots in this gallery:

The two additional pics not of those already shown above sure don't look like Perry is engaging in calm conversation.

The scrap between Rick Perry and Mitt Romney may have gotten more attention in Wednesday’s presidential candidates debate, but it was tame compared to the dust-up between Mr. Perry and Rep. Ron Paul, two Texans who apparently have spent plenty of time digging up dirt on each other and aren’t afraid to use it.

I think Perry is imploring Paul to pull his finger.

We all know what happens next.

Yep. Perry farts away his campaign. :)

One recommendation, putting aside how I would alter the format or choose moderators - replace Huntsman with Thad McCotter, on merit.

Thad McCotter would steal the show.

Maybe he should be giving responses: Link

There is a YouTube where Paul clarifies what did (or didn't happen) in those debate photos.

Enjoy the videos and music you love, upload original content, and share it all with friends, family, and the world on YouTube.

I hate to say it, but I'm just not paying attention to politics much anymore. I will get more interested as the primaries come around, but frankly, I'm just tired of it all. I'm tired of demagaguery, I'm tired of sound bites, I'm tired of hearing pundits opine on who is "Electable." And yes, I'm flat out, sick and tired of Obama. I didn't vote for him, but I had hoped that when he was elected, there would be some hope and change. There wasn't. In fact, all of what I consider bad in politics sped forward at light speed!

I used to take great sport in politics. I used to think that it was interesting. In time, all I discovered was that the more I cared, that the more I paid attention, the more frustrated I got. And nothing changed. The more I paid attention, it became more obvious that everything was worse.

I have given opinions on the problem with the debt. It amazes me that the more you comment on the debt, the more you here the rhetoric spewed back about how raising the taxes on the rich is the answer and conversely, cutting spending on the NEA, NPR, DOE and others is the answer. My God!

In reality, cutting real spending is the only answer. That is cutting (not reducing rates of increases) spending on social security, DOD, WIC, HUD, government pensions and all other "off limits" programs needs to happen. It is a great luxury to be able to spend like the US government does. It is a luxury that we cannot afford. I am willing to accept taxing the rich, I am willing to accept petty cuts in the National Endowment for the Arts, all of these ideas both sides have offered. But it is hard to get too interested in politics when the painful but only solution is right in front of us and both the Democrats and Republicans best answers are akin to putting a band aid on a bullet wound.

Yeah, I'm tired. I didn't watch the debate. I won't watch the debates until it gets closer to election time. My choice will be made late. Forming my opinion now and the attention I pay now only raises my blood pressure. I choose to be ignorant, happy and a little less tired. I do promise to pay attention as the elections near. It is not only my right, but my duty and obligation to vote and I will vote intelligently. I will be informed, and come November next year, I promiose to be tired and worn out from it all over again. Just not now.
There are three rules that I live by: never get less than twelve hours sleep; never play cards with a guy who has the same first name as a city; and never get involved with a woman with a tattoo of a dagger on her body. Now you stick to that, and everything else is cream cheese.
