My thoughts on the GOP debate:
Perry: I thought Perry preformed ok. He was fairly aggressive which was interesting. That said, for the most part he seemed at ease and personable; however, he should have knocked that global warming question out of the park – he didn’t. It was a predictable question. He and his staff need to concentrate on his deficiencies. I thought his preparation was inadequate. I don’t think he hurt himself with GOP primary voters last night (I don’t believe the dynamics of the race will change) but next debate will be a real test for Perry. He shows promise but has work to do.
Romney: I thought Romney was solid – no surprise there. He wisely didn’t join the others in attacking Perry over the vaccination issue – “his (Perry’s) heart was in the right place” was good line. It also seemed to me that Perry was deliberately non-combative with Perry despite the best efforts of the moderators. I get the sense that Romney is doing two things: (1) trying to position himself as a moderate alternative to Perry (perhaps taking a page out of Pawlenty’s playbook) - sort of a Perry/Huntsman hybrid; and (2) maybe leaving the door open for a VP slot on a Perry ticket. Would a Perry/Romney ticket help expand support among independents? Maybe.
Gingrich: Once again demonstrates he has a firm understanding of the issues. I like having him on stage – he seems to be able to keep things on track, that and it is just fun to watch him attack the moderators (I imagined Newt dropping the mic, walking off stage, saying “Newt, out.”). Although, in this case, highlighting differences between candidates in primary is sort of what primaries are for…right, Newt (and, yes, the moderators where baiting the candidates)?
Paul: He hates Rick Perry. Liberals (the moderators in this situation) just can’t get their heads around the fact that Paul is Libertarian. Under the surface what they are really asking is “do you really believe that?” Yes, Mr. Williams (and other guy from Politico – who really annoyed me) he does. Move on. I think my wife’s continued reaction to Paul is quite common. She starts off agreeing and then she states “Oh, boy his verbal pace has quickened, he is getting wound up….here comes the crazy talk (shakes head, sigh).” Anyway, Paul was Paul and he didn’t help himself but he will keep his 10% or so. Best part about Paul – I am going to try and make a ring tone of Paul saying “all kinds of sexual activity”.
Bachmann: She was marginalized – largely by the moderators. My basic problem is I think she uses too many catch phrases and can be a little preachy. She is not bad on most issues; but her campaign is in serious trouble.
Huntsman: I am sending the man a bill for my television because his tie has permanently burned into the screen. Otherwise, I found him orange and condescending. Please go away Mr. Huntsman.
Santorum: Once again the lonely wing man. Will he ever get a different podium? I thought Santorum had some good answers last night – he sort of grows on me. That said, he has no chance; however, I think he should be considered for a post in a GOP administration.
Cain: See Santorum, minus podium placement.
Quick aside: Why bring on someone from Telemundo to ask questions about immigration? I sort of felt sorry for the fellow (I am sure Hispanics care about other things too) – I thought, Thank you Mr. Anchor with the Hispanic surname. We have now concluded the immigration portion of the debate. You may leave now.
One more: MSNBC post-debate (super panel, by the way): Al Sharpton discussing how not to alienate moderates and independent voters?
