Democratic Governor Dayton chose to veto the Republic proposed budget of 34 Billion (previous budget was ~31 billion) with no tax increases. The governor wanted a bigger budget with tax increases to "tax the rich".

Thousands of state employees [at least 24,000] were expected to be sent home without pay, contractors told to walk away from hundreds of road construction projects already underway.
