  • Government Shut Down?

Can't say it'd really be a bad thing...

House, Senate Leaders Head to White House for Last-Ditch Dealing on Budget
"The White House has refused to take the tough issues on ... What it really looks like is that the White House has increased the likelihood for a shutdown by dismissing out of hand a vehicle" that could prevent closing down the federal government.

Even as shutdown talk continues, Republicans were bracing for a seventh short-term resolution to keep government operating for one more week so Congress can get through the machinations needed to pass a compromise spending plan.

The one-week continuing resolution, which is a backup that Boehner will only "break glass" on if he has to, would exact stiff demands, and senior budget negotiators say they aren't sure it has the votes to pass even if it were accepted by Democrats.

The last-ditch deal -- which is being drawn up because the House needs to allow a three-day buffer before considering a longer-term budget, pushing back a vote beyond Friday night's deadline for a shutdown -- includes $12 billion in cuts from an array of places and a funding plan to provide for the Pentagon through the end of the fiscal year ending Sept. 30.

"We hope the White House and Senate Democrats will get serious about making real spending cuts on a long-term bill, but this measure provides us with an option if House Republicans choose to use it," Boehner spokesman Michael Steel said late Monday.
GOP to Unveil Budget Plan Cutting More Than $6T Over Next Decade
Rep. Paul Ryan’s proposal, set to be unveiled Tuesday, will serve as the Republican’s official response to President Obama’s proposed $3.7 trillion budget for 2012. The White House claims its plan would cut deficits by $1.1 trillion over a decade.

But Ryan, R-Wis., in an interview with "Fox News Sunday," accused Obama of "punting" and said Republicans' plan would exceed the fiscal goals set by the president's fiscal commission -- which issued a report calling for $4 trillion in cuts. That report never made it out of committee.

"We can't keep kicking this can down the road," Ryan said. "The president has punted. We're not going to follow suit."
It also calls for reforms to the nation's "outdated tax code, consolidating brackets, lowering tax rates, and assuming top individual and corporate rates of 25 percent," Ryan wrote. "It maintains a revenue-neutral approach by clearing out a burdensome tangle of deductions and loopholes that distort economic activity and leave some corporations paying no income taxes at all."

Among some of the likely more controversial plans are efforts to end the conservatorship of mortgage giants, an elimination of Wall Street bailout authority and a rollback of "expensive handouts for uncompetitive sources of energy."

I'd have to look it up, but I read that a government shut down would end up costing us more money than not having one.

Boehner: Government shutdown would cost more money than it would save

Speaker John Boehner on Friday said shutting down the federal government would be more costly than keeping it running and his party is against a shutdown.

On the same day that President Obama warned that a government shutdown could jeopardize the economic recovery, Boehner said a shutdown would trigger immediate financial problems.

“If you shut the government down, it’ll end up costing more than you’ll save because you interrupt contracts – there are a lot of problems with the idea of shutting the government down – it is not the goal,” Boehner said Friday outside his office suite in the Capitol.

It's starting to look like it's going to happen. Only question will be how long it'll last... House Passes GOP Stopgap Budget Bill, Obama Threatens Veto
The House of Representatives on Thursday approved a stopgap budget bill that would fund the government for one week and the military for the rest of the year, though Senate Democrats oppose it and the president has vowed to veto it.

The Republican-authored package passed on a 247-181 vote, mostly with GOP support. The vote was a last-ditch attempt to avert a government shutdown as Congress nears a Friday deadline, and the chances of that happening didn't seem to improve as of Thursday afternoon.

Seconds after the vote, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and House Speaker John Boehner emerged from a White House meeting to declare there was still no deal to fund the government through the end of the fiscal year.

"There is no agreement on a number. There (is) no agreement on the policy issues," Boehner said. "We're continuing to work toward an agreement. ... But we are not there yet."
Though Reid claimed Thursday that "the only thing holding up an agreement is ideology," Boehner reiterated that lawmakers still haven't settled on how much money to cut.

With a shutdown on the horizon, lawmakers kicked the fingerpointing into high gear.

Reid preemptively blamed Republicans, saying they wouldn't budge and calling their agenda "extreme." Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell pointed the finger right back, saying the Senate could still avert a shutdown by approving the one-week stopgap House Republicans plan to send over.

"This is the only proposal out there that keeps the government open," McConnell said. "If a shutdown does occur, our Democratic friends have no one to blame but themselves."

Well, I'm one of the federal government employees (IRS) that will not be working after tonight. 8) Ah well, if it does thats more FT study for the cpa exam (got two parts still to pass).

If you look at past government shutdowns then this is not a good idea for the taxpayer. The reason is that the employees are compensated for the days off work! So essentially you pay them and get nothing out of it. The other of course is that things like tax refund checks stop going out, lost revenue, etc.

Not really looking for a debate here but that is my perspective on it.

Sounds like there's still a chance it won't pass as members of both sides are very not pleased.

Reset Your Shutdown Clocks The next few days could be very interesting as both the House and the Senate look like they could run into a bit of trouble getting this done.

Obama’s Tax Increase Trigger: Punishing Taxpayers with Automatic Tax Hikes When Politicians Overspend.
Responding to widespread criticism of his AWOL status on the budget fight, President Obama today unveiled a fiscal plan. It already is being criticized for its class warfare approach to tax policy, but the most disturbing feature may be a provision that punishes the American people with higher taxes if politicians overspend.

Called a “debt failsafe trigger,” Obama’s scheme would automatically raise taxes if politicians spend too much. According to the talking points distributed by the White House, the automatic tax increase would take effect “if, by 2014, the projected ratio of debt-to-GDP is not stabilized and declining toward the end of the decade.”
