        Prince McJunkins (Football, 1979-82)

An intense competitor who possessed extraordinary athletic ability, Prince McJunkins was one of the most exciting offensive players to put on a Shocker football uniform. Directing the option offense of Coach Willie Jeffries, McJunkins became the first player in NCAA history to rush for 2,000 yards and pass for 4,000 yards in a career. He concluded his career by leading the Shockers to an 8-3 record in 1982, their best mark in 21 seasons. McJunkins had his uniform number 1 retired after that season, joining Linwood Sexton as the only Shockers to be so honored. An elusive, yet strong, runner at 6-foot-1 and 170 pounds, McJunkins established Wichita State and Missouri Valley Conference records for total offense with 6,591 yards. He was twice honored as the MVC's Offensive Player of the Year in 1981 and '82 and was the league's Newcomer of the Year in 1979. Upon his induction, he held or shared career records for most points, rushing attempts, total offense and plays, and ranked as Wichita State's third-leading career rusher with 2,047 yards and second in passing yardage with 4,544 yards. Inducted, 1989.

Prince was very exciting and fun to watch play. That game in which WSU beat Ku in Lawrence is still strong in my memory.

Yes, but Prince did not play in the KU game. What was the quarterback's name?
"If you're going to do it, you're going to do it right," athletic director Jim Schaus said. "If we're going to put 'Wichita State' across our chest, then every team is going to matter."
