Over in the basketball thread, it was mentioned that Simon Peter was the first pope of the Catholic church. I would respectfully disagree.

I think it was Simon Magus mentioned in Acts 8. The Catholic church fits in with more of the beliefs of Simon Magus than they do with the Jew Simon Peter.

Do a Google search of Simon Peter, Simon Magus, and Pope and find a bunch of discussions on this.
