Presuming he grew up in a low income situation (I don't actually know for sure), it isn't surprising. The culture of poverty, especially urban poverty, includes spending money when you do have it, and being expected to "help" lots of friends and family. While I don't agree with all her assertions, Ruby Payne's book A Framework For Understanding Poverty did enlighten me on some of the subtle and not-so-subtle differences in how lower, middle, and upper classes view things.
