  • Store ordered to pay $667,507 to KU Athletics

    For copyright infringement

Not exactly sure if that is the same font they use, but it is red, says "Kansas" on it, and doesn't say anything about University.

Now, there are shirts behind him that obviously are intended to "imitate" the KU Athletics image, but this shirt being one they found infringed on a copyright?

Sorry, I better cover my butt a little, anyone know how to add the (TM) thing? Don't want to get sued for using the letters K-A-N-S-A-S in a way that may be implied as meaning the University of "That Place".

And by my calculations, "That Place" University just increased it's revenue by roughly 33% with no real expenses.

I was at that store this weekend. Great store with amazing tee shirts. Lawrence is a good town. Also Cole Aldrich sat by me at the football game. He was talking to a hot blonde who was sitting next to me before he came.
The mountains are calling, and I must go.

There are so many things wrong with this paragraph I don't know where to begin.......

But "......who was sitting next to me before he came" I think is the wrongest of the wrong.

She didn't leave with him if that is what you meant. They were friends I am pretty sure, I don't really care to be honest. I was up there for my sisters soriority's family day.

Back to the topic at hand, if you go to their website, joe-college.com, you can tell they are obviously attempting an end-around of trademark infringement. It's to the point they have a page that tries very hard to distance their products from anything official.

If it was just one or two shirts among a large product offering, that's one thing. But this is their business and I think they should be held accountable. Though the fine seems a little steep.

I agree the fine is a little steep, considering the amount they bring in each year is only roughly 2 mil for EVERYTHING they license, I can't see how this store did over $650k worth of damage to their business.

The fact that this red shirt was considered one of the trademark infringing items worries me.

Its red and says KANS...wait...not going there. You know what I mean. Really. I think the airport still has the blue shirt with that word on it in white...

He may be holding up a plain red shirt that says, "Kansas", but those aren't the ones that got him in trouble. It's ones like these:

How is this even an issue?

This shop's intent is blatantly obvious. They can hide behind the "this shirt looks kinda different" all they want, but both they and any reasonable person knows it's BS.
The truth will set you free. But first, it will piss you off.

I agree the shop's intent is blatant, I'm not sure that I agree with the amount of the fine!

Does anyone know how they came up with that amount?

I would guess it was the estimated profit from sales of copyright infringed products, plus some kind of fine. If they did $2 mil in sales I could easily see a fine of this size. And I would bet they were warned numerous times to stop and ignored them, they don't just jump right to fines & penalties so I don't feel too sorry for the store owner.
