  • Hartman Arena Misconceptions

I had to post this because of something I saw an anit-Intrust Bank Arena person post.

They said that Hartman Arena is "packing in the people and the events". I saw this and was skeptical because I haven't heard of any "big" events there since Alan Jackson.

In October they will have ONE public (by public I mean if you buy a ticket you can go) event which is Jeff Foxworthy. Not exactly "packing in the events or the people"

It is just another conspiracy by the anti arena crowd to distort the facts to their own advantage.
The mountains are calling, and I must go.

Lets also remember that Hartman Arena is a 5000 seat venue designed for a different market niche than IBA.

Yea I am aware of that but they try to compare the IBA to Hartman and then they claim that Hartman Arena is just selling out and events are piling in when that is not the case.

Further, that one public event is all they have scheduled for the rest of the year, according to the website.

How much taxpayer money did Hartman receive to build the arena? So if he doesn't pack it in night after night who bares the risk?

So it's really nobodys business but his how successful his arena is or isn't.

With IBA, we are all on the hook so it better be successful and I sincerely hope that it is. I just don't see any government entity being successful at anything in the public sector except waste and tax increases.

Actually, I wouldn't mind if the rest of the government had to follow the USPS mandate of being a financially self-sustaining operation, which they are. That is why the postage rates go up a bit every year or two, and why a couple post office stations in Wichita were on the list of potential closures earlier this year.

ShockBand – you are, in my judgment, a little off base. I think it would be wise of you to pick a different government agency, if that is possible, to use as an example of efficiency. The USPS has been failing for a long time. Every similar business — such as package-delivery companies — either makes money or goes out of business. In contrast, the USPS makes a business out of losing money. Please see this report by the Government Accountability Office:

High Risk Series: Restructuring the U.S. Postal Service to Achieve Sustainable Financial Viability

GAO’s report states that the USPS “is the largest civilian federal agency, employing about 633,000 career and 94,000 noncareer employees and operating a total of about 38,000 facilities nationwide.” It projects that the USPS is on track to lose $7 billion this fiscal year. GAO concludes that the USPS needs to “optimize its retail, mail processing, and delivery networks to eliminate growing excess capacity and maintenance backlogs, reduce costs, and improve efficiency. The USPS has made limited progress in optimizing its networks.” To the layperson, that encompasses everything the Postal Service does.

As an aside, the USPS’s problems occur not despite the fact that it is a monopoly, but because of it. And the problems are compounded because the USPS not only is a government-enforced monopoly, it is a government-run one as well. Without profit-maximizing ownership but with captive consumers, the USPS has long existed in a vacuum free of competitive pressure.

If the USPS happens to remake itself into a “financially self-sustaining operation” – I’ll gladly admit I rushed to judgment.

Sorry, back to the alleged disinformation and distortions concerning the Hartman Arena.

I never said anything about efficiency, just the fact that they are charged with being self-sufficient - I should have said over the long haul, since obviously they will operate at losses in some years. The GAO report you cite is about things they need to do to achieve their mandate of self-sufficiency. If only the rest of our government was mandated with self-sufficiency...

BTW, my late father-in-law was a career letter carrier, so yes I am biased a bit.

And I don't trust the government NOR corporations. Neither one cares about the individual.

Sorry, this should get back to the topic or else I'll have to lock it, or lock myself up, or ban myself, or sumpin'...

True enough you did not directly; however, the post you replied to did seem to be referring to government waste (inefficiency). The reason the GAO report exists at all is because the USPS has been hemorrhaging cash.

The USPS may have a mandate but they have real world difficultly meeting it – and I am not confident they can or ever will. The USPS survived for so long because there was no superior technology for transporting information on an individual basis. But after being whittled down successively by telephone, fax, and package delivery, its business has now been chain-sawed by the Internet. In all likelihood, these problems have been tolerated for so long because the Postal Service is just a small fraction of the federal budget.

And this has nothing to do with or is in anyway intended to disparage, your late father-in-law – or the rank and file letter-carriers in general.

And that is absolutely all I have to say about that….my sincere apologies to wsushox1 for contributing to this thread going slightly off the rails.

I know next to nothing about the Hartman Arena – but please continue to discuss.

I wouldn't be surprised if Hartman Arena got some help from Park City.

Hartman received IRB's and a 10 year tax-abatement from Park City i believe.
