  • High school football

    Today's the day.

All the talk up here is about Hutch vs. Rockhurst (they are expecting roughly 6000 to show up), but I would wager that Buhler vs. Andover is a bigger game. Two of the top-five in 4A, AVCTL league opponents squaring off in the first game of the season.

I can't wait for it to happen. I am a student at El Dorado High School and can tell you that we here can't wait. We will probably not have as good a year as last year (which was not very good) but we still won 2 of 3 in our district.

Buhler vs. Andover is a huge game.

Hopefully we will get the games in...the rain might not cooperate.
The mountains are calling, and I must go.

Kidding about what? The Hutch/Rockhurst game has no bearing on the season other than it's just a game on the schedule. Out of league, out of district. No common opponents, not even in the same state.

Yes, the hype is there and it will get huge publicity, which is cool. There's some rivalry to it (grudge match, state lines and all) so I don't take anything away from it, but it is what it is.

With Buhler/Andover you have two teams in the same league (AVCTL III), both are preseason top-5 in 4A and could meet again in the playoffs. There is simply more riding on that game for those two teams than for Hutch or Rockhurst.

Royal, I understand that Buhler/Andover is big for the class and league, but Hutch has been a step above everyone else for quite a while now and this game is what they need. Rockhurst is usually top dog or close to it in Missouri. This game is just on all sorts of higher levels than anything else that will be played in the next 9 weeks here in Kansas.

Plus Royal, if Buhler/Andover aren't in the same district...this game also means squat in the grand scheme of things.

                Good point.

I'm sorry but anytime you get a chance to see the top teams from opposing states play, that takes the cake..

They aren't but they could conceivably play again in the playoffs.

Again, I'm not saying the Buhler/Andover game is or should be the most interesting from a fan perspective, just that it, in my opinion, has the more meaning to Kansas 4A football in 2009 than the Hutch/Rockhurst will have on Kansas 5A football in 2009.

I don't really know much about the different leagues, but is there any chance the GWAL (city league) will be expanding to include surrounding schools such as Maize, Andover, Derby, Goddard, etc...? They are prime to make a nice rivalry or two; especially with the additional two high schools being planned in NE and SE Wichita...

It looks to me that we should be talking about the football powerhouses being in the Hutchinson area!

                          Impressive wins for both!
