  • Wichita Teachers Union Reject Contract

Fifty-six percent of the membership voted against the contract that called for pay freezes, elimination of bonuses and increases in health care premiums.

UTW, which represents nearly 4,000 teachers in Wichita, in July reached a tentative agreement with the board that would include:

    • A salary freeze at 2008-09 levels.

    • Step and longevity bonuses, which are given for years of experience and service.

    • Requiring employees to pay $20 per month toward health insurance premiums, which may be waived if employees participate in four wellness events during the benefit year.

Should a contract agreement not be reached the board can implement a unilateral contract, that may or may not include provisions previously negotiated.
Evidently 56% of the teachers are clueless on what is happening in today's Wichita economy.

I think they said salary was just below 38,000, and with benefits around 46,000. All things considered, I think they should just shut up and accept the contract.
