Severe Weather SC Kansas (6/15/09)

SPC has issued a Moderate Risk for SC Kansas for Today and Tonight. Could be the last significant KS tornado outbreak (potential) for the summer.

Tornado - 10%
Hail - 45%
Wind - 30%

Last night, a possible tornado went south of Anthony by ~4 miles (this is where GRL2 Analyst had the strongest rotation). It was a classic supercell that kept cycling.

Town and surrounding area got hit by 70+ MPH winds. My dad said the winds were bowing in the garage door until it was touching the car.

Next threat for the week will be 110-114 heat indices by the end of the weak.

Definitely looks like the 2009 severe weather season's last major hurray for Kansas this spring for sure as it looks like the infamous death ridge looks to take over after these series of disturbances.

Looks like things should get going in the Dodge City to Great Bend to Kingman triangle and slide east. No cloud cover to hinder instability today.

And to answer your question about the GRL2 or 3 from the other thread SB, no I don't have either one but am looking to get it soon.

I`d never consider the severe thunderstorm season to be over quite yet. Tornadoes getting less and less frequent with spring ending June 21st. But don`t forget we can still get hail during the summer.

Remember June 19th 1991 or 1992 hailstorm that pounded Wichita???

Yes, I remember that hailstorm quite well as a kid. We lived in northwest Wichita so I think it just missed us, but I remember something like it caused around a half a billion dollars.

Yes the tornado season is waning, but I said the last "major" organized severe weather event of the season. We'll get thunderstorms and some pulse storms throughout the summer, but the major stuff will be all but done after today IMO.

It happened on June 19, 1992. From Wikipedia,

Two batches of severe thunderstorms, occuring [sic] within 6 hours of each other, dumped hailstones up to 4.5 inches in diameter across Sedgwick, including the city of Wichita, and surrounding counties in south-central Kansas. Over 10,000 homes were damaged. The hail left wheat fields in a near total loss. Estimated property damage totaled $500 million with crop damage at $100 million. The thunderstorm episode ranks as one of the worst ever to hit Kansas.

Saw 3-4 Tornadoes tonight just right outside my home in Butler county. 2 rope tornadoes and 2 short lived tornadoes that were larger the rope tornadoes.

The storm structure was amazing.....the wall cloud was pretty beautiful and there was a nice inflow band coming in from behind. Our spotting car took some hail damage sadly. Hopefully insurance will cover repairs (if we can get it repaired).

Where abouts in Butler? I haven't been watching any local media. We haven't had much of anything along the western edge of the county. We just recently started getting a nice downpour and have had a lot of lightning.

I did hear a bit ago that Hutch got some damage. Talked to my mom who had city council meeting tonight and a few of our officers headed towards El Dorado. She didn't have any info though. Did hear there was another system moving into Wichita about now.

Well there were three reported tornadoes in Butler county. Two south of El Dorado and one by the lake. Saw all three however we thought we might have saw another rope tornado.

I had no clue things were that interesting in the area. All that was 20-25 miles east of me. I was a little surprised when I saw the post and flipped the TV over briefly but heard nothing.

Yea the storm in Butler County was so explosive. It developed from a small storm to a monster in around an hour.

Here is video of that storm producing a nice tornado and a funnel. The same storm we were tracking.
