She was an extremely hot Miss USA winner. I remember watching it when I was like 8 years old. She was Kansas' first and only winner. It was friggen awesome. And she looked so sweet and innocent.

Not to mention, her chin has been worked on, too. To me, she looks like she has had too much plastic surgery to preserve her youth, because she looks nothing like when she won Miss USA.

Seriously, she was a real hottie when she won the crown at Century II in '91.

No doubt and while many things were rumored about her at the time, I found her to be very pleasant and likeable when I was lucky enough to meet her.

As a side note, can you believe Wichita hosted the Miss USA back then?


The CVB should be at least half as successful today...especially given the taxes they collect.

Imagine that.....a tax sponsored entity that claims they need more revenue and is actually decreasing their performance.....amazing.

The only problem with these types of events is that they cost of ton of money to bring to your city. They want free hotel rooms, a cash incentive, etc...and they really don't bring much outside revenue to the area when compared to what they cost.

The CVB is supported by the city lodging tax (6%)...and they only get a small fraction of what they help generate. The city government takes the majority for other uses.

Well...just throwing some rough numbers here, but:

$100 million in total hotel revenue each year in the city (relatively close number - 7,000 rooms, 60% occupancy, $65 rate)

$100 million X 6% lodging tax paid on room charges = $6 million to the city.

I think the CVB only gets about 25% of the $6 mil. They don't generate all of the hotel revenue directly, but a lot comes in indirectly through their advertising, promotion, etc. The city takes the other 75%...and who knows what they do with it.

The success of the CVB is hard to determine....but I agree that they aren't as successful as they make it seem. But we have horrible facilities and not enough lodging downtown to compete with similar sized cities for conventions.

They also get a portion of their budget from membership dues...but I'm not sure how much.

I have no idea where to find the actual percentages of where the lodging tax is distributed. Probably with the city finance/budget office? Wouldn't it be part to the Open Records Act?
