Why is it when you say "thank you" people respond back with ' thank you" instead "your welcome"?

Is it to humbling for people to say the "w" word?

Maybe because you're listening to the wrong people? I can't really say if I've heard only a 'Thank you' response to a thank you. I usually hear 'You're welome' or nothing at all.

Try this; when the clerk at the store or resteraunt says, "come again", reply with "you too!"
