This is just pure speculation on my part.

A donor or group of donors has come forward with the seed money to begin a legitimate fund-raising effort.

Edit: I might add that I doubt the athletic department is directly involved. With the economy I would be very surprised if they are even thinking, let alone considering, adding anything to the budget.

I've watched this thread for some time now with great interest.

One thing though....

Through all the years, forums, and username iterations, have we ever known Shirley not to be the epitome of "tongue-in-cheek"? I mean seriously, the guy is about as sarcastic as they come on the net, but now during one of the worst economic downturns in our lifetimes', everyone is taking the bait that anything remotely regarding the resurrection of WSU football is likely or probable.

Frankly, I'm surprised I'm the first one to bring this up. The concept of crying wolf (and intentionally or unintentionally rounding up some troops to further the cause) for entertainment value on internet forums is not new. I don't blame or fault Shirley for this (if this is, in fact, the case) since it is a fine art of the BBS world, but come on people.

To be honest, FWIW I'd LOVE to be proven wrong here.
