  • Obama isnt going to hurt you on your home sale gains

No. A new e-mail being circulated about Obama's tax proposals is almost entirely false.

Alert readers may already have noted that this chain e-mail does not provide links to any of Obama's actual proposals or cite any sources for the claims it makes. That is because they are made up.This widely distributed message is so full of misinformation that we find it impossible to believe that it is the result of simple ignorance or carelessness on the part of the writer. Almost nothing it says about Obama's tax proposals is true. We conclude that this deception is deliberate.

Capital Gains Rate: It's untrue that Obama is proposing a 28 percent capital gains tax rate. He said in an interview on CNBC that he favors raising the top rate on capital gains from its present 15 percent to 20 percent or more, but no higher than 28 percent. And as for a 28 percent rate, he added, "my guess would be it would be significantly lower than that." Furthermore, he has said only couples making $250,000 or more (or, his policy advisers tell us, singles making more than $200,000) would pay the higher capital gains rate. That means the large majority of persons who pay capital gains taxes would see no increase at all.

Ok, Senator Obama is not going to cut taxes for 95% of Americans since between 30-40% don't pay Federal Income Tax.

Tell it like it is Senator and stop the lies. Tax increases WILL (not might) slow the economy, the rich will not suffer as a whole, the poor will, and it is a thinly veiled attempt at socialism. Redistribution of wealth, pure and simple.

It is not going to help anyone that is poor. If you think for 1 millisecond that giving a family of 3 an extra $500 per year in a welfare check is going to change anything, except perhaps a boost in the illegal drug and online porn industry businesses, then you are way past lost.

How is that for stopping the lies? Let's concentrate on the lies of the candidates and not a whackjob fringe goober with an email account.

If it's "the economy", stupid, then let's focus there.

At the presidential debate in Oxford, Miss., Barack Obama described his tax plan and said, "Here's what I can tell the American people: 95 percent of you will get a tax cut."

We checked a similar claim of Obama's recently, that 95 percent of working families would get lower taxes under Obama's plan, and found it to be True.
A detailed analysis by the nonpartisan Tax Policy Center found that if you look at all tax filers, 81 percent of tax filers would see reduced taxes under the Obama plan.

So Obama's statement at the debate glosses over a few important details about who would get tax cuts under his plan. If you're talking about everyone, it's 81 percent. If you're talking about working families, it's 95 percent.

Are you blaming the housing bubble?

The market was (in some cases still is) artificially inflated.

                    Depends where you live.

Yup. Where I live the housing market seems to have slowed a bit but it is still high. For example, a home my wife and I looked at a year and a half ago sold for about $1.1M -- it is now on the market again and the listing price is $1.6M. Personally, I don't think they will get that price; however, people are still trying to get a 30%+ return per annum.
