The fire department that I volunteer with had an increase in Suicides and attempts last year over the year previous. This was also the case with many other departments around us. I don't know the figures this year so far, but I think ours have gone down, yet others have stayed up and/or continued to rise. I think that history will show that it is in direct relation between suicides and the economy.

Being a person that has fought, and thankfully so far won, those particular demons at several points in my own life, I can tell you that these type of trigger events are just that. Trigger events....in almost 100% of the cases there will be a variety of underlying issues that have little or nothing to do with what actually triggered the event.

And frankly, money is not often the root of the issue.

Very true, but it seems that those suicide rates go up when the economy gets bad. It has probably at least contributed to it, but there is usually something else they give as a reason like, "My boyfriend dumped me" or "Mom and Dad don't like me" or stuff like that. I've heard some crazy ones before. And with kids, money shouldn't be a factor, but who knows?
