  • Democratic strategists are now optimistic of Obama Landslide

Three weeks of historic economic upheaval has done more than just tilt a handful of once-reliably Republican states in Barack Obama’s direction. Democratic strategists are now optimistic that the ongoing crisis could lead to a landslide Obama victory.

The real question is can Obama close the deal? He struggled against Hillary and there seem to be some buyer remorse in the democratic party at the time. Will the same thing happen nationally?

Anecdotally, I just saw a lady at work who has been a Obama supporter all year change her mind. Why you might ask - because of taxes. She's an engineer and her husband is a small business owner. There incomes are in excess of of $250,000 and her husband I guess explained to her that her paycheck will likely get smaller after Obama is elected. She's not to hot on him now.

Also, I might ask this - does anybody think that the Democrats are going to reauthorize the Bush tax cuts when then they come due in 2010? These had significant tax cuts for middle class. I don't think so.

If they raise taxes on the wealthy the economy is going to grind to a halt and recession won't be the word...it will be depression.

On a list of stupid things politicians can do, raising taxes in the midst of an economic crisis is about as close to the top of the list as you can get.

Speaking of tax increases, has anyone else caught on to what is happening with T-bill auctions?

I caught some discussions yesterday to the effect that the Treasury is really trying to push 10-yr notes. Apparently they have been selling short-term notes (less than 1-yr) like crazy and now that they are maturing the Treasury isn't in such great shape to cover. (BTW, I'm just learning how this stuff works so if I say something that doesn't make sense you'll know why).

If I understood things correctly, there was an auction (maybe yesterday) of $10B worth of longer-term notes. Well, they weren't well received and ended up costing the Treasury/taxpayer $240 million (something about a drop of 40 basis points?).

If someone with a good grasp of this wants to further explain, I would be grateful!

Frankly, I was surprised it was only 40 bp. There aren't a whole lot of people out there wanting to hang on to US paper for 10 years.......the discounts will get deeper I'd be willing to bet.

So, what you're saying is that instead of Kansas's electoral votes going Republican as usual, they will...oh wait, never mind.

I'd be confident too if I had the votes of dead people. :D

That's the Republicans in Florida. Didn't Bush get something like 30,000 more votes in a couple of counties than there were registered voters?

                  sound like internet fiction.

There were actually some independent recounts. They used multiple methods for looking at rejected ballats and all recounts showed that Bush won. Of course the MSM didn't take much time to report it because it was "old news".

A well resprected pollster says don't believe the hype.

The presidential race is still too close to call and could come down to the very last weekend before voters decide if they like or distrust Barack Obama, a national pollster predicts.

“I don’t think Obama has closed the deal yet,” pollster John Zogby told the Herald yesterday.

Zogby’s latest poll, released yesterday in conjunction with C-Span and Reuters, shows Obama and John McCain in a statistical dead heat, with the Illinois Democrat up 48-45 percent.

Zogby said the race mirrors the 1980 election, when voters didn’t embrace Ronald Reagan over then-President Jimmy Carter until just days before the election.

Old news to everybody but the Libs! They still bring it up daily.
