because there are worse offenders out there to throw under the bus. Like people getting kicked out of their parents house and not making child support payments.

I agree that there needs to be more severe punishments for those that do this. Especially those that do it more than once.

There are some pretty good ideas around the world, here are a few,

In England, a drunk driver pays the equivalent of a $250 fine, spends a year in jail, and then loses their license for one year. In Russia, drunk drivers simply lose their license for life.
Some countries are more creative in their attempts to keep the inebriated off the road. Turkey, for example, punishes drunk drivers by taking them 20 miles from their town and making them walk back with a police escort. In Poland, drunk drivers are subject to jail, fine, and even worse, mandatory attendance at political lectures. In Malaya, if a man is caught driving drunk he is jailed. If he is married, his wife is jailed, too. In Costa Rica, the license plates are removed immediately from the cars of those who drink and drive.

In some countries, drinking and driving is punishable by death. A first time offense in El Salvador leads to execution by firing squad, while a second offense in Bulgaria also leads to execution.
        I like these the best.

In France, drinking and driving is punishable by the equivalent of a $1,000 fine, imprisonment for one year, and loss of license for three years. Finland and Sweden automatically sentence drunk drivers to one-year jail sentences including hard labor. In Norway, a drunk driver is jailed for three weeks with hard labor and loses their license for a year. If they do it again, they lose their license forever. In South Africa, drinking and driving results in a ten-year prison sentence or the equivalent of a $10,000 fine and, in some cases, both.

Taking liscenses doesn't do anything. They'll just drive without it. This guy was on a moped. He doesn't have to have a liscense to drive one of those.

I personally like the taking away of the liscense plate. That would make you pretty obvious to police that something was wrong.

While I like basically all of those punishments, pretty much none of them would work in the U.S. unfortunately. Especially the one about taking the person 20 miles out and making them walk back with an escort. People would somehow twist it into cruel and unusual punishment. And win!

The problem is that "driving drunk" in Kansas equates to .08 blood alcohol level. Somebody had a handheld blood alcohol tester at a restaurant once and after one beer I was almost .08. That is completely ridiculous. It is a total miracle that I as well as about 75% of everybody in town doesn't have a DUI. If the city of Wichita is going to allow people to go to a restaurant or club and drink alcohol, then they are going to have to allow them to drive home with one or two beers in their system. The current DUI laws are so hypocritical it is utterly shameful. It's all designed to feed the legal system under the guise of "protecting the citizens". If you want to protect the citizens you get the DRUNKS off the street and tell those with a beer or two during dinner "Thanks for contributing to our local economy" as they drive by.

If you are going to throw everybody with a beer or two in their system in jail, then you better start following all those xanax-laden bluehairs out of Walgreens and lock them up as well...

I'm 215lbs and I had just eaten a complete Greek Pizza. Of course, this is River City Brewery and their beer is quite potent but still, with a full belly and one beer I shouldn't have been borderline. My bro, who is around 185lbs, was blowing .08-.09. He had the same meal and one beer. If he would have gotten pulled over for a routine stop he would have been looking at a serious problem.

It has already been established normally in tests that 2 beers puts you near the the .08 limit, and the 3rd puts you over the limit.

The reoccuring repeat offenders do need to be stopped (drunks by nature) from driving.

I quit drinking years ago. The risk is just not worth it.

Perhaps the breathalyzer we were using wasn't accurate? I don't know, but it showed us at or over the limit with one pint of Harvester Wheat.

What can you do? Ban alcohol? You could make the penalty for "driving drunk" so high that everybody would be too afraid to drink at restaurants thus in effect banning alcohol. The economic impact would be heavy.

There are always going to be idiots that do stupid things like mishandle guns, drive drunk, excessively speed, etc. etc. You can't make rules that harm those that do not pose a threat to society. This man needs to spend some solid time in jail and have his license suspended permanently. No other response is needed.

That would be a great start.

How about the first offense you lose your license for one year and wear an ankle monitor to track your movements.

Second offense, how about two years house arrest.

Third offense prison, say five years or so maybe more.

If you kill someone while driving drunk how about the death penalty?

                              The guy yesterday,
