  • The wisdom of Matt Damon

Actor Matt Damon said a Sarah Palin presidency would be like "a really bad Disney movie."

"I think there's a really good chance Sarah Palin could become president, and I think that's a really scary thing," he told the Associated Press, referring to the Republican vice presidential nominee.

Damon suggested the odds are John McCain won't survive his first term.

"It's like a really bad Disney movie," he said. "The hockey mom, you know, 'Oh, I'm just a hockey mom'... and she's facing down [Russian] President Putin... It's totally absurd... It's a really terrifying possibility."

Damon also said he believes she was chosen for "political purposes."

Last month, the actor told Conde Nast Traveler he fears putting his foot in his mouth.

"For a lot of actors, our biggest fear is that we're going to start talking about things we don't fully understand and sound like idiots," he said. "In the long run, I'll do much more good if, when I open my mouth, I have something worth saying."
Let's hope he can hit a D-1 Curve ball!

These guys can say what they want, but just remember the words of Michael Jordan when asked to support a Democratic candidate in his home state:

        "Republicans buy shoes too!"
Because Denny Crane says so Dammit!

He brings up a fair point of discussion re: Palin and Putin.

But then let's think who is more likely to wimp out in a confrontation with the Russkies and Putin, Palin or Obama?

Do people think that IF Palin was to become President (that's a BIG if) that someone like Putin is going to challenge her to a steel cage match?

It is the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA people...whomever is President is not only going to surround themselves with the best around...they are going to have the mightiest Army in the history of the world behind them.

You are worrying about the wrong kind of puddy folks.

Why does anyone put any stock into Matt Damon or anyone else's opinion including radio or TV talk show hosts for that matter? Their opinion and judgment is not any better and may be worse than your own. I have liked Damon's movies but being an actor does not give him any enlightenment.

He does raise a good question that should be asked about each candidate. We do not know a lot about Palin's make-up. She has been rather sheltered so far. Hopefully the presidential race has provided more insight into McCain and Obama to work under stress. This is not known about Palin. Still, at this point why would we believe that Palin would deal with other countries leaders any different than McCain or Obama or Biden? The next six or seven weeks will tell us more of how she reacts under pressure.

Just for clarification, Putin is no longer the President of Russia. He may still run the country but has a new title.

Damon is right. And while I agree with the Doc about advisors surrounding a president, there is still a whole lot of trouble a president can get this country into when he/she listens to the wrong advisors (see GWB presidency).

Of the four potential presidents, I feel most comfortable with McCain at the helm, but if something happened to McCain you would have a total neophyte replacing him. Palin would of course be a lame duck president and would essentially be continually spoon-fed by McCain's advisors for the rest of her partial term presidency. That is the only thing I can take solace in.

Doesn’t surprise me one bit. Of course they want a UN/EU appeaser in the White House. Seriously, why should we give a flip what free-spirited Euros think about our presidential election?

I do think our "soft power" has taken a major hit around the globe over the past 5-6 years. We lost a lot of the sympathy (not that we care or need it) and support we gained after 9/11 when we went into Iraq. From that standpoint, I completely understand their views.

But the Euros have always voiced their desire for whoever the Democratic candidate is. I guess misery loves company.

I think if we are concerned about what other nations think of us it puts us in a damned if damned if we dont situation.

With all the natural disasters in the world, tsunamis, quakes, etc. The US is almost always the quickest and biggest responder to these, whoever the affected is. But other nations, Euorpe in particular likes to focus on what they disagree with us about, such as Iraq.

And come to think of it, I haven't heard of any nations providing the US help with all the hurricanes we've had recently.

We should be concerned about how other nations view us - to a point. There are certainly other things that demand a higher priority. We had to go after those responsible for 9/11. If other nations didn't like it, tough.

But with with Russia starting to flex its muscle and China's continued growth as a world power, we don't need to be hurting our image with past, current or potential future allies.
