  • Federal Funding Accountability and Transparency Act of 2006

During the Republican National Convention, Carly Fiorina, the former HP Chairwoman, said in John McCain's first year in office he would require a review of all government agencies and the results would be published on the internet for everyone to see. She made it sound like this was something that John McCain and the Republicans were going to come up with.

Actually the bill to do this already exists and went into effect last December. These were the sponsors of the bill: Tom Coburn, Barack Obama, Tom Carper, and John McCain. Didn't Sarah Palin in her speech say that Barack Obama hadn't authored any bills? Besides this bill, you can go to http://thomas.loc.gov and select Barack Obama's name under Browse Bills by Sponsor and come up with 129 bills he has sponsored so far.

There is a difference between "Authoring" and "sponsoring".

"Authoring" means that senator/representative (in reality their staff) actually wrote the piece of legislation. They are likely the primary sponsor (but don't have to be)

"Sponsoring" means that senator/representative have signed on to promote it. It just really a signal they are showing support for the measure. Sponsoring is just adding your name to the list.

It's true that Coburn was the original author of the bill, but Obama helped write it. That's why they call it the Coburn-Obama Transparency Act.
President Bush Signs Coburn-Obama Transparency Act

President Bush, when he signed the bill into law, mentions Tom Coburn from Oklahoma, Tom Carper from Delaware, and Barack Obama from Illinois. He doesn't mention John McCain. So it looks like McCain just added his name to the list.

John McCain even thanked Barack Obama for his involvement. From the Hearing on S.2590, The Federal Funding Accountability and Transparency Act of 2006.
MCCAIN: Thank you very much, Mr. Chairman, and I want to thank you and Senator Obama and Senator Carper and Chairwoman Collins for your involvement in all these issues and including this specific one.

Out of these 129 bills and amendments that Obama has sponsored, which one would you consider his greatest achievement?

          That's what I thought.

The political aspects of this forum are just lame. Everyone has already decided how he/she will vote. I guess SB Shock gets credit for zinging Democrats and they will all give up.

McCain is using "Bush (i.e. Rove) tactics" and its operatives. If McCain is elected, expect the same administration as we have now (with some minor changes). If you like the Bush administration, vote for McCain. If you don't, vote for Obama. If you don't want your vote to count, vote for Paul or some other third party candidate. It is as simple as that. Republicans will try to smear Obama. Democrats will try to make fun of Palin. It's all smoke.

Bottom Line: McCain = inexperience + Bush; Obama = inexperience + change

Don't worry too much about it. Just do all you can do and let the rough end drag.

I somebody is going to try to come in do smoke-n-mirrors then they she should expect to get called on.

Of course it's all smoke. Neither party has any answers. All they have is their talking points, and they try and say as little as possible. The politicians we have in this country our not our best and brightest of this nation and alot of them are corrupt (at least IMO).

Believe it or not, I am still undecided. I will watched the McCain/Obama at Saddleback. I will watch Obama interview on O'Reilly show. I will watch the debates. I will vote for the best person who I think can lead this country and who will do the right thing, even if it means going against their party.

Frankly Obama has made some inroads this week, he has shown he has the ability to admit he was wrong (on the surge). Meanwhile McCain/Palin speech yesterday was a rerun of their "best" from convention speech which makes for good sound bites but in the end will become tiring (already was for me)

The ultimate problem is our nation has quit putting their faith in God and are now expecting men to save them. It's not going to happen.

I wouldn't want to say which is his greatest. That all subjective. I was only mentioning them because there were some in the media that said he hadn't authored (sponsored) any bills since he's been in the senate.

Spangler, Tell us how Obama = Change. He wants to cut defense funding, raise taxes, create class envy, devide the country into haves and have nots, punish achievement, socialized health care, kill unwanted babies etc... It is the same old liberal agenda.
Please tell us how Obama = Change.

That's true. That's why I put it like that. I probably should have said "authored or sponsored".

When a Dem talks about change, it means they are going to reduce the amount of their change you get to keep.

Obama calls that just being neighborly.
