"We" were having a discussion about F22s, F35s, F117s, A10s, etc. and our discussion turned to the detection of SR71s. To what extent could the SR71 be detected/targeted by ground based IR systems? Could this be used to detect F22s or F35s? (Of course, F35s with external weapons are not very stealthy. Weapon stealth pods might change this someday, of course.)
My guess is that ground based IR systems would not be able to track a "hot" object (e.g. SR71) well enough for missile guidance and therefore would not be able to track a "cool" supercruising F22. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Supercruise What do you think/know?
PS Imagine a supercruising A10.
