I remember hearing sometime in the last week or two that there was a group trying to get polar bears listed as endangered due to "global climate change". Hoping that this would prevent the US from ever drilling in ANWR and possibly opening up lawsuits against oil companies. How much of that is absolutely true and not I'm not sure. But there's definitely some truth there.
I believe some compromise or something was reached to list them as threatened, despite the fact that in the past 30 years the polar bear population in AK has gone from something like 5K to 30K. Anyway, Alaska, and Gov. Palin, are suing to keep them from being listed as threatened.
