What's Wichita's appeal to young professionals? Two surveys will seek hard answers
    BY DAN VOORHIS
    The Wichita Eagle

    PICKING BRAINS

A brain drain is stalking Wichita -- and it's time to stop talking and start doing something about it, say local leaders.

Two fact-gathering efforts backed by the business community -- including one that begins today -- are planned to bring some hard data to the question of why young adults leave Wichita, what causes others to stay and what can be done to attract more. The ultimate result will likely find its way into local company programs and government policies.

    Good article.

A major factor in attracting new residents is economic opportunity: jobs.

If nightlife were the only thing, then Padre Island would be en economic giant. It isn't.

No, it isn't just nightlife. Location (middle of nowhere) weather (poor) jobs (not good) pay (not too good either) entertainment (poor) all factor in.

I don't even know why they write this stuff up. Everyone should know why few young people stick around here. Im 22 right now and once I have the funds in place i'll be out of here by 25 or so. They need to concentrate on getting the best of the best from the small towns around here because those people will think Wichita is great compared to where they live.

I'm 26 and enjoy life here. It's not perfect, but other area cities don't really appeal to me either. I don't mind what we have here. There are certain industries that aren't well supported here and I can understand those people leaving. But Wichita has just about everything I'd want. KC may have a few more options but outside of professional sports really doesn't appeal to me. I like not having to deal with traffic. I would like to find a better paying job but that's more on me than the city at this point.

I would donate some cash to help him get out of here earlier than 25 if it is so bad.

P.M. me and the check is in the mail.
Let's hope he can hit a D-1 Curve ball!

I had a comment on this but it violated the "parent talking about his kid" rule. I might post something after http://webs.wichita.edu/?u=commence&p=index.

I always hear about entertainment options, or lack thereof in Wichita, and wonder what it is people are looking to do? While I would admit Wichita isn't necessarily a young single person's haven, much like a college experience, what you get out of living somewhere is what you decide to make it.

At the same time you can only do so much of one thing.

As I stated in another thread. Everything in this city is geared towards the really young or really old.

Florida, buddy. My views on life are that you only live once. Why would I want to live in a place that I can't go outside and enjoy myself several months out of the year? That is something that to me, personally, is extremely important. Nothing is more annoying to me that the greyish, cold, winter days are here. Does that mean I am eliminating all the cold-weather cities? Yep, in a perfect world I would live in Chicago but it's just too cold! So Florida (Orlando) (which my fiance and I absolutely love) is a perfect fit. It offers everything im looking for along with war/hot weather year-around. Is it blistering hot during the summer? Yeah, but at least you are givin the option year-around of being able to do outdoor activities at different times of the day. Around here if it's cold you have no choice but to stay indoors. Orlando is also Florida's fastest growing city and is actually progressing which I like. It offers great entertainment, Pro sports (Magic, Tampa 45min away offers NHL and MLB) it's large enough that it gets all the big-name concerts and it's 45 min from the beach (another thing I love) and offers a nice airport with direct flights anywhere. Is it perfect? No, tons of foreign folks and tourists but it's as close to perfect as I can find for myself.

I have no issues with those who like it here. If you are looking for a family type community that's quiet, clean, and still relatively crime-free this is the place to be. My problem is with the people, apparently like you, that seem to think this place is for everyone and that if you don't like it or complain about it you should be hit with a stick.

                        I coulden't respectfully disagree more.

What do you suggest one make out of living here? If you like the outdoors you are out of luck nearly half the year and forced to stay inside. The weather here is crazy, when it's actually nice outside temperature wise it's usually blowing 30mph. If you like any type of professional sports you are out of luck. If you like Theme Parks you are out of luck. Casino's you are out of luck. Bigtime concerts you are out of luck. Im sorry but you can only do so much inside a house or building with your family which is what this city is all about.

Yes, some other cities of similar size lack some of the same qualities but boredom is not a self-inflicted wound if you aren't givin anything to work with in the first place. I realize nothing would ever make this city someplace I would want to live but what irritates others and myself is that IMO it's being held way below it's potential by narrow-minded people. It just is dissapointing everytime something here is screwed up either by all the conservatives (casinos) or the city management which is and has been a complete joke. Now they are even screwing up the arena size-wise... go figure.

It's a great thing the United States is. It offers choices for everyone and pretty much every walk of life. I just get irritated when some don't understand that some people just plain out don't like it here. I can understand why some would like it here what's the problem on the flip-side hmm?

PM me and I'll help you with your fund also.

I agree that it would be good for you to experience the world, or at least the US of A a bit more than you have.

Different strokes for different folks. It appears that as you insult some of us that like Wichita, you do exactly as you accuse us/me, with no basis. But what do I expect from one who has apparently experienced so little.

Apparently you can't read or read what you want to. I have not once insulted anyone. I wrote right before what you quote that I have no beef with anyone that likes it here. I even went as far as to say that I can understand why some types of people would like it here. This is all in my opinion and apparently for whatever reason you can't accept that.

And btw... you guys can go ahead and keep your money because you won't be able to afford what im looking at... think middle to high six figures.
