  • Vista or XP?

I'm getting ready to purchase a new laptop and am torn about which OS to get. I'm leaning toward XP but I don't want to get into a situation in a year or two where I can't get new software for it.

Any suggestions and reasons why you'd pick one over the other?

(And please, no Mac or Linux promotions. Not going to happen.)

Why dont you go with a Dual boot setup and get both. Then your good to go either way.

Currently I prefer XP Pro for the business environment, actually just purchased 30 computers with XP, but the reason for that is software and driver compatibility.

As for a home user, you might as well go with Vista. Between friends and acquaintances, I've set up 6 laptops with Vista over the last month or so. When Vista first came out I didn't like it much, but a lot of that was just getting accustomed to the slightly different interface. I've used it enough now that it's fine. Eventually XP will be gone and Vista will be what everyone (in the Windows world) is using, so you might as well get it now and get used to it.

Add to it that XP support will start fading away...

I'm on Vista at home and have no problems with it. Took some getting used to, as the moose out front told you, but no lasting hangups.

I went the VISTA route recently. If you have programs that are currently incompatible (and forever - for instance quickbooks) with VISTA, virtualization is a relatively simple option.

I've heard that there are operating systems not made by Microsoft. Probably just a rumor.
Some posts are not visible to me. :peaceful:
Don't worry too much about it. Just do all you can do and let the rough end drag.

Sorry, I didn't want to clutter up the board with a new topic since the following question is somewhat laptop/PC/internet related:

Is Shockernet loading slowly for anyone else?

Well, I was about to say I was having no problems, but now it does seem to be loading slowly. But only slowly loading the front page...everything else seem to be fine.

I got the same thing. Its loading fine just taking longer than usual.

You should probably read this before making an XP or Vista decision:

The last line in my original post was just for you, LinuxFan316.

As for the slower loading, it's probably due to the ChipIn widget taking a little longer than normal.

My apprehension with Vista is the extra system resources it requires. I could go up to 3GB of memory and bump up the processor but I'm also on a budget that is fairly tight. Doing both would probably blow that budget.

I plan on doing some video editing on this machine but can't afford to go with a dedicated video memory card.

Nah, don't have to blow the budget, memory is cheap. If you'd like, shoot me a PM of what you're wanting to spend and what programs you're wanting to run and I can try to help you out.

RS, thanks for asking the question. I'm at the point where I need to upgrade the family desktop and don't have a lot of $ either.

Anyone have suggestions on where to purchase one?
