Growing up we lived in the area just north of 21st and Amidon. The houses were built had like one basement for every 12 homes or such. Ours had the basement. When a tornado alert happened the neighbors would all come over with the kids. Women and children in the basement and all of the men would stand in the drive way talking and looking to the Southwest. There were about 15 to 20 kids our age that would come over and it was like playground time. Only once did the men come beating feet to the basement and that tornado lifted up and eventually hit at 13th and Woodlawn.
