Football Stadium Development

I don’t know much, but I’d like to see a new stadium built south of K-96 (across from Koch Industries) with access off of Hillside and Oliver… west of Rainbows United. I have no idea if any of that land is available, however a football stadium there would be ‘highly’ visible from K-96 and with-in a reasonable walking distance from campus. It’s been awhile since I’ve been in that area and I’m not sure what’s even there? Unfortunately, I don’t get out much anymore. :)

Upon further review, I have decided that St. Louis is the best place for WSU to put it's football stadium. Sure, WSU fans would have to travel 6 hours to get there for each game even though they will likely have the biggest fanbase in the MVC, but the other MVC schools probably can't afford to travel further West than that with their handful of fans.

I don't think building small with intent to expand is a good idea. If you're going to build it, build it big enough now while there is enthusiasm. Costs will only go up and if enthusiasm drops, the money to expand won't be there. Now, design considerations for future expansion is fine (and wise), in case the unimaginable were to happen and WSU someday becomes - I can't believe I'm even typing this - a football school.

Building entertainment venues out in the boonies, and away from critical masses and centralized locales, is the opposite trend to what is happening nationally. Which means that if given the choice, Wichita leadership will choose the former because derp-derp Wichitard leadership.

Thankfully, Bardo is not a part of that clown class.

Are you speaking east or west of turnpike, or west side in general to the city? Big difference, at least in rainfall.

It's the furthest point you can go northeast and be in Wichita.

The point being, you don't build a football stadium off campus by about 5 miles if you're actually serious about it. Especially when a president has been on the record saying he wants WSU headed more towards a traditional university and less a commuter school.

K-96 and Greenwich is FAR from the boonies.

It is the very edge of development for that part of town. North of that intersection the land use is still ag in nature in majority. A 1/2 mile north of there is an elementary school for a district that extends to the west side of El Dorado.

Relevant information regarding the City Council setting up public meetings for STAR bond districts:

"The City has an opportunity to construct improvements to the Stryker Soccer Complex and the adjacent and previously designed Northeast Sports Complex to create a regional, multi-sport, youth athletic complex. It is necessary to amend the boundaries of the District to include the property on which the Stryker and Northeast Sports Complexes (Complex) are located to permit the use of STAR bonds to finance the improvements.... The success of the adjacent indoor, multi-sport athletic facility, the Wichita Sports Forum, within the District has created and demonstrated the demand for additional multi-sport facilities in the region. The City owns the Complex, which is located directly northwest of the existing District boundaries. Proposed improvements to the Complex will improve existing multi-sports fields and will also construct a number of new baseball/softball fields to allow year-round use and create the opportunity to host regional and national sports tournaments at the Complex."

Not sure this addresses Football on that site.

Also for those interested in seeing affiliated baseball make a comeback in Wichita in a shiny new, or refurbished stadium...

"The City has an opportunity to make improvements to the Arkansas River bank, Lawrence Dumont Stadium (Stadium) and other property west of the Arkansas River that will complement the east bank improvements from WaterWalk to the Keeper of the Plains. Combined, the area will be a destination for tourism and sports. It is necessary to amend the ordinance to expand the District for STAR Bond purposes only to include the west bank properties in order to include the river bank, stadium and other property in the District and make a change to the District Plan to incorporate making the referenced improvements. Amendment of the ordinance to expand the boundaries and make a change to the District Plan requires holding a new public hearing at a time and place set by resolution of the City Council, pursuant to state law.... The buildings and facilities to be constructed or improved in the STAR Bond project district may be described in a general manner as a mixed-use development consisting of some or all of the following uses: major multi-sport athletic complex; stadium improvements; destination attractions; retail uses; restaurant uses; other general commercial development hotel uses; pedestrian overpasses; museums; and associated public and private infrastructure"
