Hula, Amazon Prime or Netflix???

    Hula, Amazon Prime or Netflix???

    Hula, Amazon Prime or Netflix???

    We've had DirecTV forever but with all these newer ways to get tv into the living room...I'm wondering about leaving DirecTV and going rabbit ears for local channels and an alternative to DirecTV.

    Any of you's make the switch and could you advise on the pros and cons please.

    Here a few of my concerns (questions)...
    1. Can you or can't you record games (NFL, Shockers)
    2. Can you fast forward through commercials if you can indeed record games?
    3. Is the picture quality like that from DirecTV with full on HD?
    4. I always pay the extra FOX Sports Package come Shocker Basketball season for the games on FOX Sports Midwest? With Hula or Amazon...I wonder if I can indeed get FOX Sports Midwest to watch the Shockers.

    My internet search isn't quite answering all these questions...so I gave up google to come ask you guys. Help please!!!! :)

    1. I'm pretty sure you mean Hulu.
    2. None of these platforms is about sports. None of them are DVRs. They are on demand platforms for TV shows and movies.
    3. What you are looking for if you want a cord cutting option that includes a sports package is Sling TV (https://www.sling.com/). Others on here may have personal experience with Sling, but I know that I have seen reviews that have complained about buffering. Even if it works, you won't have access to all the sports channels you have had.

      Mmmm~hmmm. Interesting. That's kinda what I figured. Thanks Mad. Heard of Sling before (forgot to check them out)...I'll go read up on them too.

        Each service has certain advantage/disadvantages to content - depends on your tastes. I have NETFLIX streaming. But NETFLIX does also have a CD service - but I decided it probably cheaper to rent movies off of apple TV than pay for the CD service.

        One thing NETFLIX is generating it own original programing (and it is in 4K) to add along with it library. It has Narcos, House of Cards, Marco Polo, The Ranch, Last Chance U, Longmire to name a few.


        Disclaimer - apple TV doesn't stream in 4K, you need the 4k TV to have the 4k enable Netflix app loaded.

          I have Netflix, Amazon Prime and Sling Blue. I get ESPN through a family member login on their Watch App.

          Netflix is great.
          Prime is mediocre, bad UI and much of the prgramming is additional fees. We have Prime for free shipping, not because of their selection. They do have Penn & Teller Bull$hit, which I watched. That show could be offensive.
          Sling Blue allows me Fox Sports Midwest, Comedy Central and a few other cable channels. It lacks Discovery Channel, or Id have everything I want.
          I use the watch ESPN app for most other sports. I use another person's login.

          All in all, I'm very happy. Netflix and Sling is $40. Cheap. Amazon Prime is simply a bonus to me because the free shipping pays for it. If we didn't buy so much crap online, I'd drop it. With as many times as the UPS truck stops at our house, it's like Christmas ask the time!

            If you prepay for three months of Sling, they give you a Roku. They also have discounts I other devices.

              My wife and I just picked up PlayStation Vue for $35 a month to get live sports. This includes

              - ESPN
              - ESPN 2
              - ESPNNEWS
              - ESPNU
              - Fox Sports Network
              - FS1
              - FS2
              - Big 10 network
              - Sec network
              - NBC Sports
              - NFL network

              And for March madness it also includes TNT, TBS, and TruTV.

              And since there are no contracts I can drop it each summer between the end of basketball and the start of football (since I don't follow baseball closely).

              They also have a "cloud DVR" to save recordings for 28 days. I'm sure there would be some way for the tech savvy to save recordings longer.

              In any case, this pretty much is the perfect option for me to keep up with live sports. Combine it with our Netflix and an antenna and we have all the entertainment I could want for $45 a month.
              You miss 100% of the shots you don't take....

              .....but, statistically speaking, you miss 99% of the shots you do take.

                  Does anyone have any experience with using DSLExtreme as their ISP? I'm getting rid of ATT (limits data unless you have at least the U200 tv package) and would rather live in a hole in the ground than have cox. I found this company while looking at the various "cut cable" websites. Says they don't have data limits. With their prices, looks like I could do internet (at 20ish mbs), Roku and PlayStation Vue for less $100/month.
                  That rug really tied the room together.

                    Just an FYI for Royals fans: I've looked into Sling and Playstation Vue but if you live in KS, or anywhere where the Royals are always on, you will not be able to watch their games with either of these services. They are blacked out. This is the main reason why I haven't switched away from DirecTV.

                      That is strange. Are you sure?

                      I have had sling since literally the day it came out. All of the Rangers games down here (I live in DFW) are available just like they were through my prior cable provider, whether they are on Fox Sports, FS1 or otherwise.

                      I would be surprised if Fox Sports selectively blacks out MLB games for specific teams on Sling but anything is possible.

                        I get all Royals games in Omaha, they black out StL.

                            Sling. I'm not sure what Fox does on local cable. What is weird is I get the StL fox sports, but Cards games are blacked out, Royals games are carried on one of the Fox alternates. So, I don't get the Cards on Fox Midwest, which is the default for my Sling Fox station, I get the Royals on the alternate feed.

                            I'm a Cubs fan, so I'd rather have the Cards.

                              That's interesting - where I'm at, the Rangers are the default for the Fox Sports regional carrier, and they aren't blacked out. I wonder what dictates which regions are subject to the blackout for their default local teams.
