While almost every other segment in our economy saw fit to make accommodations for the weather potential yesterday (employers sending people home early, McConnell moving their aircraft hundreds of miles away, colleges and universities shutting down and closing campuses), the geniuses in public education went on with business as usual yesterday. This in spite of the fact that the weather was anticipated to get dangerous at quite literally the time school was getting out, when not a single snow day was used all year.

Let's have a round of applause for the mental midgets in charge of such decisions in the various area schools. The fact that our local media didn't pick up on this massive display of stupidity is a narrative on the quality of the overall Wichita media community.
Seems a tad over-reactive and quite different than the experience here in McPherson/Hutchinson as well as Manhatten/Wamego.

    • I have no expertise in meteorology, but in watching that visible satellite loop yesterday, I found it interesting how different areas of formations moved in different ways. Namely, the line that was on us made a "T" with a perpendicular line that formed up more in NE Kansas. I thought that was interesting how the storms generated out of that so differently.

Over-reactive as compared to? Let me repeat: A supercell with rotation was entering Wichita yesterday, at the very time when schools were dismissing. It turned out to be a heavy rain and small-medium hail event, but it had the potential to be worse, with a terrible situation that was completely avoidable.

OKC area schools closed up shop early. Are they over-reactive?

Find a screen shot of radar showing a big cell moving into the areas you mentioned at school end yesterday. I know the areas you mentioned also got some crappy weather last night, but the development was earlier farther south, which is imperative to the context.

Yes, evening activities were cancelled. That's not school time.

I didn't pay much attention because it didn't affect me, but on the news after the second storm passed (the one with rotation), they said they were now going to let kids out of school and buses continue. It sounds like some schools at least were holding children until the second storm passed?

              • Tornado sirens just sounded in Ralston, NE.
There are three rules that I live by: never get less than twelve hours sleep; never play cards with a guy who has the same first name as a city; and never get involved with a woman with a tattoo of a dagger on her body. Now you stick to that, and everything else is cream cheese.

                  • I think there are some millibars moving around some peessure cells converging in a band of instability. Jet stream bands working into a southernmost array of low pressure.

                      .
Maybe not your district. I know my son district did. Extra-curricular (i.e. spring sport practices, meets) activities were cancelled by noon (they even warned parents a decision would be made in the morning so parents could have a plan). They made adjustment in release time for H.S. to get them out early once the Torn. watch was issued.

This is also what I experienced.

                        • We had a really lame tornado today. I think it knocked over a mailbox. We had scattered, pea sized hail, too.

I think it was an EF-0.3

Did it flop over or twist out?

Did the post snap, or is it still one piece?

                            Was the mail lost!?

                            Was the red flag set?

Did it land in the street or sidewalk?

                            Were there witnesses?

Did it also sustain hail damage? If so, how big?

Is the integrity of the paint still to manufacturing warranty standards?

Did any other debris further damage the mailbox?

Did the owner get pictures both before and after the damage occured?

Do we know without a doubt this was an act of God, and not the result of an automobile accident?

Did someone report this to the police? Name of the officer that took the report?

Could this have been an act of domestic terrorism?

We're there any earthquakes prior to the tornadic event?

WAS IT INSURED!?!? What type of policy?

                                Not sure.

                                No earthquakes.

Hardly any lightning and no hail in Ralston.

Early reports had it blowing gently, just like Shocka's mom.
