TO ALL VETS - Join the Million Veteran Program (MVP).
I just did today - If you have not received an invitation from VA already, contact your local VA Hospital/Clinic or call 866-441-6075, or visit www.research.va.gov/MVP/
This is a national program designed to better understand how genes affect health and what cures may work for some, but do not work for others, and why not. This program will not help us as it will take years to develop and research. But, by participating, you may help save the lives of your grand children or those that follow. Our Genes are made up of DNA and researchers will study the genes of a million plus of us, to include our individual lifestyles, environment, military experiences, and disease characteristics, in a huge data base which nothing in the world today comes close to comparing to. The results of this medical research will help doctors improve the health care for all Americans in the future.
Take cancer as just one example - After the study has been completed in the future, they are confident that they will be able to project much more accurately what medicines/procedures/treatments are most likely or least likely to work for a large number of people with similar gene structures. The data base info is strictly protected and your info can only be identified by a number, not by name or SSN, wich are destroyed after the number is assigned, so nothing can be traced back to you. 456,000 Vets, as of today, have joined the program.
They will take one small vial of blood, one time only, and you will received a one time questionnaire to complete concerning your general health; generalized personal history (Married, Single, etc; where you have lived and are living now; general locations where you were stationed while in service; were you exposed to Agent Orange, or to anything anywhere in the world. You may omit answering any questions you do not wish to answer, and may drop out of the program at any time.
