  • Commanche/Barber County fires

Here in Hutch we have yellowish skies and the air smells of smoke.

Sun disappeared completely behind the smoke in Wichita about 6:00PM, after casting that yellow/orange light for the prior couple of hours. Smoke isn't on top of us like it probably is for you in Hutch, but looks more like a looming spring storm off to the west.

Incredible to see something like that happen in Kansas. I've been in fires/fire camps out west where ash and partially burned vegetation is falling from the sky.

But to hear about it in KS is crazy.
The mountains are calling, and I must go.

I can smell the smoke in West Wichita now. Is that possible or am I dreaming that? Maybe a neighbor is barbecuing? I definitely smell smoke tho.

            Likely

You will likely be seeing falling ash soon as well. Multiple reports in Western Wichita confirm this.

I can confirm this. I just went out and picked up a piece of ash off my deck. There is not much at all and you have to really look for it, to know that it's not just leaves or seedlings/petals.

Yeah, the winds from the front apparently have started coming around, because the smoke is more on top of and in Wichita now.

I found out about that on my way home from work, as I came across a road block roughly 2 miles east of the fire. It was about 3 miles SE of Buhler, from my understanding. The north section of Buhler lost power at 6:40 and just got it back on 2.5 hours later. I don't know if that was due to wind or fire. Wind would be my guess.

The fire in Harvey county is up to 10,000 acres burnt. That sounds like a lot (and it is a lot), but pales in comparison to the one SW of here, which is now over 100,000 acres, according to reports.

Everyone please be careful and watch your ash.

All joking aside, the wind was definitely bad here in Houston the last couple of days. It has to be bad when I notice it. Perhaps the front that came through here this morning will end that. Unfortunately, you guys are probably closer to the high pressure that the front dragged down and it is affecting you double (before and after the passage of the front). I am hoping that everyone gets through these fires with only minor disruptions.

Dead mama cows and their babies. Hundreds are dead, probably thousands, down in that country. The ones that escaped the fire have nothing to eat.
