1991 Bachelor of Music and Bachelor of Music Education

I still play off and on, mostly bass trombone. I'm in the Delano Jazz Orchestra and usually get to play two or three church gigs a year. I get to play the Rutter Gloria in a couple of weeks at First Presbyterian downtown in Wichita.

Professionally, I have had quite a migration.

As one would expect I started out as a band director, but after about ten years the constant barrage of evening commitments burned me out. I changed to teaching computer studies to PreK-5th, which was much more relaxing, but also a great chance to better understand how to work with preschool and elementary age kids. It's not totally unlike moderating a sports message board.

After that, I spend one year as a data specialist and assessment coordinator. It wasn't a great fit, so after that year I got back into the classroom.

So since 2007 I've been teaching in the career and technical education (formerly known as industrial arts) field. Most of that time has been teaching pre-engineering courses to middle school students. We touch on a lot of areas of design and engineering, including this year adding in an Introduction to Computer Science course, which has me really pumped. The course uses MIT App Inventor to do some simple Android programming, and also gets the kids into their first steps into Python. So I've been doing a lot of learning about Python these past several months. I just started a Udemy course that had a Black Friday discount that will have me using Unity to build some games, and will also get me into my first steps with C# as well as some basic 3D rendering with Blender. It is cool to see that some of you have some pretty extensive background in CS, who knows, maybe I can tap into some expertise for something at some point in the future.

SQL itself is rather boring, but if you like the coding aspect you can get that in SQL stored procedures. I know at least one relatively well-known ERP system is built on it.

I rather enjoy the bouquet of SQL in the evening. I prefer the PL variety in a 2006 vintage with all it's complex flavor; but when I really want to go all out, I'll usually uncork a full bodied SQL3 -- which really trips my TRIGGER. Wait! ROLLBACK! If I want a truly satisfying transaction, I will simply splurge and go for the more esoteric SQL-92 and just take in all of it's more simple yet refined syntactic flavor. Take care, my fellow SQL connoisseurs, as I must COMMIT for the evening.
