  • The Gong Show: Wichita State Day

So apparently the Royals weren't the first ones to have a "Wichita State Day". I randomly stumbled upon this gem today:

It's the Gong Show with a Wichita State Day episode. For those of you who are more "seasoned" than I am, can anyone explain the significance of this? I know the Gong Show was fairly popular back in the day. Regardless, it's pretty cool when they play our fight song as the show begins.

Also wouldn't be surprised if someone here was on the show, haha.

That's incredible. The Gong Show was borderline porn in 1977, so of course as a child I never missed an episode, except apparently the WSU one.

Dean Hargrove (WSU grad and television producer) was ‘hooked’ into Hollywood; he might have had some influence with the Gong Show producers and possibly a friend of Chuck Barris (just a wild guess on my part). I’ve seen the WSU show posted here before; I recall even posting it myself. :) I can’t get enough of Gene Gene the Dancing Machine and the Unknown Comic; good stuff!

Too young to have watched it live, but caught many a rerun on TiVo in the early 2000s. An almost inexplicable show, and I mean that as a high compliment.

Seeing that episode end without Gene Gene the Dancin' Machine shimmying around and having Wu's body parts lobbed at him from offstage was a disappointment.

Haha, no. Sorry if this was posted before. It was one of my "suggestions" on YouTube that they give you. Clearly I watch too many videos with Wichita State in the title (is there really such thing as too many though?).

Your guess is not that wild. I did not see the shiw when it aired, but was told at the time it did, that there was a WSU alum working on the show...

JP Morgan was more than just a little suggestive in speech and apparel.
