I don't fly a lot, but it would seem to me that since Wichita isn't a hub (very few connecting flights), most of the eating/drinking spots would be pre-security like it used to be. Or at least balanced.

It's apparently not. Before security, there is only one little place, that doubles as a dunkin donuts/beer bar. Probably 8-10 chairs I'd guess. And no gift shop surprised me.

I wonder due to TSA requirements if they just decided to put eating establishments post TSA checks as then there are no issue with what u can and can't bring through security. Personally when I'm flying out I prefer getting through security before looking for food/drink.

As an outsider, let me give you my take. I used to travel weekly. Ive been in and out of lots and lots airports. With that, from a travelers perspective, this stuff really doesn't matter. If the terminal is a little dusty, so what? And I never bought food or drink pre checkpoint.

If you can get into the airport and get out of the airport, that's what matters. I always wanted to be able to get in, get through security, find my gate and find connecting gates. If you can check luggage quickly, claim luggage quickly and do all the rest above, you have a good airport.
There are three rules that I live by: never get less than twelve hours sleep; never play cards with a guy who has the same first name as a city; and never get involved with a woman with a tattoo of a dagger on her body. Now you stick to that, and everything else is cream cheese.

            Dumb question alert:

In the new terminal can non-travelers get through security to see off or receive friends and loved ones, or is it just like the old terminal where you have to stay "downstairs" unless you have a ticket?

I am not aware of any terminals that will let you past the security checkpoint without a ticket. Just a sign of the times.

                Not since 9/11.

What I thought on both accounts. Just curious. I don't fly a ton.

Paint in the men's bathroom had smudge marks and this wasn't due to customers. My impression, they were in such a rush to open the airport, they simply didn't have time to get to the fine stuff. That place needs a good once over to clean up the details.
I was in the airport the day after it opened and saw all the smudge marks on the metal panels. Many were way out of reach of a person. Still the airport looks fairly good and handy. Good impression overall. There does need to some cleaning of the metal panels and down low I suspect that this will be an ongoing thing unless they have some type of protective coating.
