  • Jermaine Jones' goal has to at least be in the discussion I think, but I too am sticking with Cahill at this point.

True, but I thought the pass was more epic than the finish....I felt like the keeper was at least as responsible for the goal as RVP.

I'd put Jones' goal in the cannon discussion for sure. But striking a ball in the air from over your shoulder is just so magical. :)

          • The side of the bracket the USA has ended up on, looks to be an easier path to the final.

Belgium is good, but beatable. Argentina and Holland can be great, but are totally bipolar (one game they look world class, then totally lost the next).

Whatever happens, the rest of the Cup should be fun.

            • Ahhhhhhh yeaaah! Round of 16 time! Based on prior matches I believe that Chile is going to challenge Brazil far more than most realize. I can't go so far as to predict an upset, but if Brazil doesn't bring their A game they can lose this one!

Also check out Columbia's James Rodriguez ... a young gun that is going to make a serious statement in the next many years.

That was the Wichita State vs Kentucky rematch. AMAZING game. Might end up being the best of the entire tourney.

Which one? Both of them panned out for me. :)

                    • Tomorrow it's the end of the road for Mexico. Mexico will probably play them respectably though.

Also not seeing Greece advance. Actually not sure how they made it this far. Wasn't that impressed with them in group play. Neither team has huge fire power so this could be a low scoring game but with Costa Rica winning the possession battle and thus the match.

                      • At the 85 minute mark in Mexico-Netherlands I said to myself, "this is crazy--one Greece, Costa Rica, or Mexico are going to be in the semis, none of whom has ever won an elimination game at the World Cup." I leave the predictions to Kung Wu.

I was really disappointed by the two near upsets but a great weekend of games at any rate.

I think you mean quarter finals (elight eight) but yeah the thought of Greece advancing was a stomach turner.

                          • I look for the France to beat Nigeria by more than 1 point. Probably 2-0 or even 3-0. Perhaps Nigeria can muster up the courage to make it a game though. Nigeria has very little firepower so their only hope is to play extremely defensive. I hate to admit it, but France has looked solid so far.

Now the Algeria/Germany match up is interesting. Normally you'd think .. "Germany. Algeria. Game over, how many does Germany win by?" This is going to be an interesting game with the potential for lots of goals. Algeria can score, but they weren't really tested in group play. I believe they'll get a goal or two against Germany, but their defense is unorganized and ... well ... bad. I suppose on paper this will be a multi-goal win by Germany but at least it should be entertaining.

Nope I meant semis--since Greece/Costa Rica winner would meet the Mexico/Holland winner and Mexico was on the brink of winning it meant that a team that had never one a WC round of sixteen game was going to make the semis, which was a pretty crazy situation. Now Holland/Costa Rica in the quarters is a much more typical--one underdog breaking through to the quarters and then probably having their tourney end. Costa Rica has bested a very impressive slate though so you never know.

Gotcha. Costa Rica has been a neat story. I think Netherlands will finish them off though. I think that's true of all three underdogs. I didn't see any of them advancing beyond the Netherlands. In fact based on group play I think Netherlands has a decent shot at winning the whole thing. Amazing I am saying that given that the tourney is in Brazil. How can you predict anybody but Brazil to win?

My top three so far based on play (in order):

                                Netherlands
                                Germany
                                Brazil
