The top two teams of each group advance to the "Sweet Sixteen". You get one point for a tie and 3 points for a win. If there is a tie on points, then it comes down to goal differentials. Then it's do or die to get to the "Elight Eight".
So the USA got some massive traction for their win today.
Germany = 3 pts
USA = 3 pts
Portugal = 0
Ghana = 0
Germany will probably win all three matches, so it comes down to Ghana, Portugal, and the USA.
Portugal will likely beat Ghana, while we probably lose to Germany (taking these games out of order).
That would put us at:
Germany 6pts
USA 3 pts
Portugal 3 pts
Ghana 0 pts
So assuming that's true, then next Sunday is super important. We have to tie or beat Portugal to advance. If we tie Portugal then it comes down to goal differential, which means we need Germany to beat us by less than 4 goals and that Portugal only beats Ghana by 1 goal (as we did). If Portugal beats Ghana by 2 then we need Germany to beat us by less than 3 goals, etc.
After the group stage, it's not so complicated. It's simply do or die at that point (single elimination). If the match is tied after 90 minutes of regulation, it will go to two 15 minute overtime periods (basically a 30 minute mini-match). These two periods are NOT sudden death. They are played to the full 30 minutes. If still tied it goes to penalty kicks.Last edited by Kung Wu; June 16, 2014, 09:59 PM.Kung Wu say, man who read woman like book, prefer braille!
