I can't believe I'm posting in one of these threads but here goes.
The LAST thing this country needs is more impaired citizens. That being said, as my beliefs continue to sway towards a Rand Paul type stay out of the way mentality, I struggle with this idea.
Personally, I hope they don't decriminalize it. But if they do, I hope dealing it remains a crime, with extreme punishment, like 100 years in solitary, for dealing to kids. Similar penalties for driving stoned would be excellent as well. Just my .02
So I have no idea what the modern Libertarian platform looks like, but the old school Libertarian platform pushed for decriminalization where only _doctors_ could prescribe marijuana -- but not just for medical purposes. The idea being that you could easily get cheap marijuana, you'd just have to see your doctor once or twice year to get a checkup and "the lecture". The hope being this would deteriorate the black market out there because people have a cheap source of FDA approved (hence safe) marijuana, and the people smoking it would at least get some sort of professional advice once per year (or whatever) on the dangers of continuing to smoke it, all while keeping the government out of it. This was called "decriminalization", not "legalization". You couldn't sell marijuana unless you were a pharmacy, for example. I also believe it would not be a crime to smoke it, only to sell it. The idea being that the war on drugs is a horrible failure and our jails are filled with users (not just sellers) that haven't harmed anyone but themselves.
Is this still the Libertarian platform?

We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.
It is amazing to me how anti government activists, libertarians, and the like, leave out this important part of the Constitution (PROMOTE THE GENERAL WELFARE) which protects our culture from chaos. In my humble opinion, unless we can recreate a common vision for our country, with some common values, and principles that we can agree on, we will continue on a downward trend toward the decimation of our culture and our country. We are definitely leaving a mess for our children. We have swung too far from our common principles at this time to the left, but to swing too far to the right or have the viewpoint that we have no responsibilities toward each other is a recipe for disaster IMHO.
We are a nation of laws that doesn't allow unlimited freedom, and we have these laws because we are looking out for everyone. If we did have unlimited freedom, we would have anarchy. We can't say whatever we want, or do whatever we want to do.

With freedom come responsibility, responsibility requires moral choices. Once you lose your morality, u will ultimately lose your freedom.

I will add that this is in my opinion why both the George Soros model and vision for America and on the opposite end of the spectrum being the Charles/David Koch vision for America will ultimately take our country down the tubes. Two very wealthy men whose opposite viewpoints on the Constitution and at times viewpoints of agreement place large amounts of money to change our country and ultimately decimate it.
