  • CVS Caremark to Stop Selling Tobacco at all CVS/pharmacy Locations

WOONSOCKET, R.I., Feb. 5, 2014 /PRNewswire/ --CVS Caremark (NYSE: CVS) announced today that it will stop selling cigarettes and other tobacco products at its more than 7,600 CVS/pharmacy stores across the U.S. by October 1, 2014, making CVS/pharmacy the first national pharmacy chain to take this step in support of the health and well-being of its patients and customers.

"Ending the sale of cigarettes and tobacco products at CVS/pharmacy is the right thing for us to do for our customers and our company to help people on their path to better health," said Larry J. Merlo, President and CEO, CVS Caremark. "Put simply, the sale of tobacco products is inconsistent with our purpose."

Merlo continued, "As the delivery of health care evolves with an emphasis on better health outcomes, reducing chronic disease and controlling costs, CVS Caremark is playing an expanded role in providing care through our pharmacists and nurse practitioners. The significant action we're taking today by removing tobacco products from our retail shelves further distinguishes us in how we are serving our patients, clients and health care providers and better positions us for continued growth in the evolving health care marketplace."

I really don't see the point, if they were forcing people to buy cigarettes against their will would be one thing, but if a person wants the product they will find it somewhere.

All they are going to do is lower the bottom line / profits and the share holders will not like that.

They are doing it for the publicity.
An “Old West” Texas analysis and summary of Mueller report and Congress’ efforts in one sentence:

"While we recognize that the subject did not actually steal any horses, he is obviously guilty of trying to resist being hanged for it."

On down in the press release it says, "The company estimates that it will lose approximately $2 billion in revenues on an annual basis from the tobacco shopper, equating to approximately 17 cents per share."

People will find their cigarettes as you say and it is a good marketing/publicity ploy as well. I applaud their initiative in addressing the confllict of promoting health and well being and selling a product that kills. You will probably never see them stop selling soft drinks though. There was an article in the Eagle on Sunday that said people in the health industry felt that smoking in the US actually may stop in what they think is the near? future. It said smoking cigarettes among teens has declined but smoking marijuana increased.

You mean literally or figuratively? There will be a big increase in fast food sales which will lead to a general bloating of a portion of the populace. If its just numbers of people I wonder where these people will find gainful employment? Fast food courts/restaurants? I can see CU enrollment applications shooting through the roof with additional trust fund kids from either coast making the move big time.
