Thorium powerplants have been an area of research for some time.

Wikipedia has a good - and interesting - read on Thorium-based nuclear power. One particularly interesting note is that two decades of US-based research was shut down in 1973 because the byproducts had no military use like uranium.

And it sounds like India is only a year or so away from a Thorium reactor going critical.
