  • Anybody able to tolerate blues?

A bizarre set of circumstances led to my getting back together with the band I played with 15 years ago. We played a couple of songs at last month's Wichita Blues Society's monthly jam at The Shamrock (West of Seneca on Douglas - just west of the tracks on the north side). We killed it, filled the dance floor, and were pretty much the best received group that played that night.

I've got an awesome group put together for the August 28 jam. The keyboard player can't make it - he will be in Arkansas. He was the keyboard player for The Gregg Allman band when he was playing on the West Coast. The bass player has been a featured performer at an International Association of Jazz Educators in New Orleans.

The other guitar player and I used to be considered among the top 5 blues players in town. 2 of those guys have died and the other will likely be playing before we play.

Barry Harris and Jesse Anderson are inaugural members of the Wichita Blues Hall of Fame. Barry is still playing, but his health is failing. Jesse is the singer I work with. He has lung cancer and will show up if he's able to overcome his chemo.

I have a female vocalist lined up who will do these songs
    Summertime - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u2bigf337aU
    Turtle Blues - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-B41dXQp6Bw
Will Not Be Your Fool - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Avz8EamGizs
    Too Much Butt - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=igu2GHbgA8s

Depending on who shows up, I will be playing behind vocalists for anywhere from 4 to 12 songs. I will be playing between 8:30 and 10:30.

The Shamrock goes to standing room only on jam nights, so get there around 8 or earlier if you want a decent seat. Smoking is only allowed outside.
The future's so bright - I gotta wear shades.
We like to cut down nets and get sized for championship rings.

You ever run across a blues guitarist here in town by the name of Brian Thornton? He left town probably 10 to 20 years ago.

I'm actually interested in Blues. Never paid much attention to it until my brother was working with the lead singer of Moreland and Arbuckle. I know this is a little off topic, but are there any Blues artists any of you would recommend to check out?

I'm not sure where the Shamrock is as I don't get downtown much but if things work out I'll have to try and make it.

I just heard about Moreland and Arbuckle for the first time this morning when my son's friend's mom came to pick him up. I guess her and her husband say them at the Orpheum last night with some other local group called Carry Nation and the Speakeasies.

          Weird.

Moreland is a cool dude. They're both local guys and from my understanding, are fairly well respected in the industry. They've toured all over the place.

Etta James (with Eddie Vinson): Both "The Late Show" and "The Early Show".

This may be one the best blues albums (CD) ever: http://www.amazon.com/The-Late-Show-James/dp/B000000XE0

And this is more of the same, though I think I like the Late Show better: http://www.amazon.com/Blues-Night-Vo.../dp/B000000XDW

Eddie is good, but it's all about Etta.

Until my wife and I were married I had never heard of Etta James. My wife had several CD's and she is one of our favorites to listen to on our way to St Louis every year. This is one of the reasons I think I will make the road trip to Loyola to visit again a place called Kingston Mines in Chicago. Its a neat venue in that they have two separate rooms/bars and a stage. One group plays and the other takes a break and then they reverse it so the crowd moves from room to room. I just picked a spot that I could see the stage in both rooms and stayed put the whole evening.

Very few compare to Etta voice. Obviously Nina Simone ranks up there but Ill jsut stop.

Moreland and Arbuckle are great and while not blues if you can catch a Carrie Nation and the Speakeasy show DO IT!!!!

I wont be able to make it on Wednesday @Aargh: as I have other plans that are a little unbreakable. Would love to venture out to The Shamrock though and catch a show sometime. Keep us updated.

There was a band out of Frisco in the early '70's that was awesome. It was pretty much putting Janis Joplin in front of a 10-piece band with a horn section. Unfortunately, there was already a Janis Joplin, so not that many people ever heard of Cold Blood. Their first album, titled "Cold Blood" is still one of my favorites. Last I checked you could still buy it on Amazon.

Here's the Etta James version of "I Just Wanna Make Love To You":

Here's the Cold Blood version with Lydia Pense singing:
This is my favorite recorded live version of Cold Blood's interpretation of Willie Dixon's classic —"I just wanna make love to you" from "Fillmore: The Last...

I have never found that version on a released album. In music terminology - that is kick ass.

For a real Texas blues sound straight out of Austin, check out LouAnn Barton. This is one of the recordings she made with Stevie Ray Vaughn :

Enjoy the videos and music you love, upload original content, and share it all with friends, family, and the world on YouTube.

She's got a song that I will not link here because of the content. PM me with a guarantee you are 18 or over, and I'll send the link. You might be able to do a youtube search for her and figure out which of the first bunch of songs that shows up is the one I won't link.

Koko Taylor has just a ton of great material:

Albert Collins has some really interesting lyrics in his music.

Then there are the guys who are too blues to be considered rock and too rock to be called blues: Joe Bonamassa, Popa Chubby, and Walter Trout.

I linked a David Bromberg song in my first post (Will Not Be Your Fool). Check out Loaded and Laid or, maybe, Sloppy Drunk. Comedy done in a blues tune.

Watched Leno tonight and he had Quinn Sullivan on. I'd never heard of the kid, but I'm guessing he is probably the future of the blues. After a little research I learned he's a Buddy Guy protege. Just 14.

In this video he's only 12:
